Major players such as Blinkit, Zepto and Swiggy Instamart registered record number of orders on 31 December, which is typically considered as the busiest day of the year for these platforms
Typically considered as the busiest day of the year for quick commerce players, these platforms surpassed their previous festive season peaks during the New Year’s Eve as consumers prioritised convenience of home deliveries for their party needs. Major players such as Blinkit, Zepto and Swiggy Instamart posted record numbers.
To deal with surge in orders, these major players had set up war rooms and even hired additional temporary workers. Some even offered the delivery workers extra incentives to carry out the deliveries. Grapes, Ice cubes emerged as one of the most ordered items during the period.
Sharing the details of the trends that were observed, Albinder Dhindsa, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Blinkit wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter), “Just some of the milestones we hit on Blinkit today- Highest ever orders in a day; Highest OPM (orders per minute); Highest OPH (orders per hour); Highest total tips given to delivery partners in a day; Most chips sold in a day; Most grapes sold in a day. Thank you for ordering and placing your trust in us, India! Happy new year everyone,”
The CEO also shared that Bengaluru emerged as the city which tipped the most during the day with a total of Rs 1,79,735 in tips. A user from Hyderabad gave the highest tip of the day (Rs 2500) to one of the company’s delivery partners.
Swiggy Instamart, another key player in the quick commerce space, registered record sales during the day as it surpassed the sales of NYE 2023 by a healthy margin. The company broke its previous record from Diwali 2024 as it hit highest-ever orders on NYE.
“Swiggy Instamart’s largest order of the day comes from a user in central Goa worth Rs 70,325! Not sure what’s cooking, but it sounds like one unforgettable party,” the Co-founder of Swiggy, Phani Kishan Addepalli shared on LinkedIn. He also mentioned that Ice hit its peak at 7:41 PM with around 119 kilograms getting delivered in that minute.
Another major player in the segment, Zepto registered healthy boost in sales during the period as Ice cubes dominated the sales surge on the New Year’s Eve.
“This NYE, Zepto is up 200 per cent compared to last year and we’re currently handling unprecedented scale. India’s New Year celebrations are in full swing—3,345 ice cube orders per hour and counting. That is 2.62x more than last year, and the night is just getting started,” stated Aadit Palicha, Co-founder and CEO of Zepto.
The sales surge observed in the segment points towards the increasing popularity of these players among the younger age groups who are trusting the quick commerce leaders to deliver their orders at the last moments.
