India's Retail Market To See Steady Growth In 2024: CBRE Report

The industry body states that regional data shows that south India recorded the highest year-on-year growth at 9 per cent

Suggesting that the retail sector has gained momentum, the Retailers Association of India (RAI), in its report, revealed that the pan-India retail sales growth was recorded at a rate of 7 per cent in May 2025 over the corresponding period in the previous year.

The industry body, in its 62nd retail business survey, stated that regional data shows that south India recorded the highest year-on-year growth at 9 per cent. West India recorded a 7 per cent rise, followed by north and east India, showing a growth of 6 per cent and 4 per cent, respectively.

“After several months of moderate growth of around 4 to 5 per cent, retail businesses are beginning to show signs of accelerated growth, with sales in May 2025 growing 7 per cent compared to the same period last year,” said Kumar Rajagopalan, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Retailers Association of India (RAI).

Among categories, QSR (Quick Service Restaurants) led with 10 per cent growth, while consumer durables and electronics and furniture grew by 8 per cent each, as per the data by RAI. Rajagopalan added that this uptick suggests improving consumer sentiment, particularly in discretionary categories. The outlook for the upcoming festive season appears optimistic, he noted.
