As manufacturing and primary costs climb, India’s wholesale price index (WPI) inflation rose to 0.83 per cent in December 2025 on a year-on-year basis, data from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry showed on Wednesday.
Positive rate of inflation in December 2025 is primarily due to increase in prices of other manufacturing, minerals, manufacture of machinery and equipment, manufacture of food products and textiles. The annual rate of inflation was -0.32 per cent in November and -1.02 per cent in October 2025.
Centre stated that the month over month change in WPI for December 2025 stood at 0.71 per cent as compared to November 2025. The index for primary articles group increased by 1.09 per cent from 192.1 (provisional) for November 2025 to 194.2 in December 2025. The price of non-food articles (2.76 per cent), minerals (1.62 per cent) and food articles (0.88 per cent) increased in December 2025 as compared to November 2025.
The food index consisting of ‘food articles’ from primary articles group and ‘food product’ from manufactured products group have increased from 195.0 in November 2025 to 196.0 in December 2025. The rate of inflation (YoY) based on WPI food index increased from – 2.60 per cent in November 2025 to 0.00 per cent in December 2025.
The price of crude petroleum and natural gas (-0.45 per cent) decreased in December 2025 as compared to November 2025. The index for fuel and power group increased by 1.23 per cent from 146.5 for November 2025 to 148.3 in December 2025. Price of electricity (4.46 per cent), coal (0.66 per cent) and mineral oils (0.07 per cent) increased in December 2025 as compared to November 2025.
The index for manufactured products group increased by 0.41 per cent from 145 for November 2025 to 145.6 in December 2025. Out of the 22 NIC two-digit groups for manufactured products, 13 groups witnessed an increase in prices, eight groups witnessed a decrease in prices and one group witnessed no change in prices.
Some of the important groups that showed month-over-month increase in prices were other manufacturing, basic metals, chemicals and chemical products, textiles and other non-metallic mineral products. Groups that witnessed a decrease in prices were manufacture of rubber and plastics products, food products, computer, electronic and optical products, paper and paper products and beverages in December 2025 as compared to November 2025.
Rise In Retail Inflation
After inching up to 0.71 per cent in November 2025, India’s consumer price index (CPI)-based retail inflation has again rose to 1.33 per cent in December 2025, data released from Centre on Monday showed.
Food inflation again remained negative in the seventh consecutive month at -2.71 per cent in December 2025, as compared to -3.91 in November 2025. However, this is significantly lower than 5.22 per cent for the same month a year ago.
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) stated the increase in headline inflation and food inflation during December 2025 is mainly attributed to increase in inflation of personal care and effects, vegetables, meat and fish, egg, spices and pulses and products.
