Uniqlo Sues Shein In Japan, Accusing Bag Design Copying

Fast Retailing stated on Tuesday that its Uniqlo business had filed a lawsuit in Japan against Shein’s owners, alleging that the Chinese fashion firm copied their round mini shoulder bag, the news agency Reuters reported.

According to Fast Retailing, the petition was filed in Tokyo District Court on 28 December against Roadget Business Pte, Fashion Choice Pte and SHEIN JAPAN.

The Japanese business is demanding “immediate cessation of sales of the imitation products and compensation for damages incurred,” according to its statement.

The round mini bag costs 1,500 yen (USD 10.27) in Japan, according to Uniqlo’s website. Fast Retailing, Japan’s largest apparel retailer, operates more Uniqlo stores in China than in its home market.

Shein, an online retailer that is reportedly seeking authorisation from China to list in the United States, will establish its first permanent showroom in Tokyo in late 2022.
