As per the Reuters report, the Alibaba ecommerce business group brings together the Taobao and Tmall Group and the Alibaba international digital commerce (AIDC) group
In a first, Alibaba Group will integrate its domestic Chinese and international ecommerce platforms into a single business unit run by one leader, as per the company’s stock exchange filing as reported by Reuters. All of Alibaba’s ecommerce platforms will come together in a new business unit.
As per the Reuters report, the Alibaba ecommerce business group brings together the Taobao and Tmall Group and the Alibaba international digital commerce (AIDC) group. AIDC groups cross-border player AliExpress, wholesale business-to-business (B2B) site and other regional platforms functioning in various regions of the world, from Southeast Asia to Turkey.
As far as the leadership roles are concerned, its chief, Jiang Fan, a former head of Tmall, has been tapped to be the leader of the newly formed unit, reporting to Alibaba Group Chief Executive Eddie Wu. Wu, in a letter to employees posted on Alibaba’s intranet, notified the new business unit.
“The ecommerce industry in China and around the world is entering a new era, and the global supply chain capabilities, fulfillment capabilities and consumer service capabilities will determine the future competitive landscape,” Wu stated in the post, which was shown to Reuters.
In one of the biggest revamp of its 24-year history, Alibaba decided to split into six business units last year. As aggressive new players gained market share, the Group’s ecommerce platforms have been facing pressure both at home and overseas. The Co-founder Jack Ma supported the internet giant’s restructuring efforts in April. The turnaround efforts have been seeing success as the international division grew under Jiang’s leadership.
Even though Alibaba has halted some erosion of its market share lead in recent quarters, Reuters reported that the challenging consumer environment in China has put pressure on all retailers and ecommerce platforms. (With Reuters Inputs)
