India’s Booming FMEG Sector Spells Retail Opportunities

The FMEG sector complements India’s economic ascent as the country inches closer to the psychological $4 trillion mark. The sector also holds strong leverage in the world’s fastest-growing markets of the world, writes Amit Mathur

The outlook in India’s FMEG (fast-moving electrical goods) sector has accelerated on both business and consumer fronts. The electrical equipment market in India itself has blossomed from a $21 billion market in 2018 to near the $50 billion mark in 2023 according to several reports. Projections indicate a continuous upward trajectory, with expectations of the market expanding further to $72 billion by 2025. India’s vibrant market not only manufactures a variety of electrical equipment but also reaps substantial revenue, particularly from the production of ancillary products and various other electrical components.

While the sale numbers of FMCG and white-labeled products have been in focus, the FMEG sector has received limited attention despite its substantial market size. For instance, the Indian Fan Manufacturers Association reports the market size for fans alone to be nearly Rs 10,000 crores. According to a 2020 survey by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), ceiling fans are utilised by 90% of households in India, significantly impacting electricity consumption.

Regulatory mandates for star ratings on ceiling fans have prompted manufacturers to prioritize the production of more energy-efficient models. Recent trends indicate a shift towards premiumization in this category, marked by technological advancements like BLDC fans, IoT integration, WiFi connectivity, and even bacteria & dust-resistant designs. Similar developments are observed in the lighting market, valued at Rs 14,000 crores, and the appliances sector, which encompasses devices such as coffee makers, blenders, and juicers, with a market size of Rs 20,000 crores.

India’s FMEG industry witnessed a dynamic year shaped mainly by evolving consumer preferences, technological advancements, as well as a post-pandemic economic boom. The global pandemic has instigated a paradigm shift in consumer behaviour and lifestyle choices, significantly impacting the FMEG market. With an increased focus on home-centric living, remote work, and heightened awareness of health and safety, there has been a notable surge in demand for electrical goods that enhance home environments.

Consumption Story Continues

At one end of the consumer story, the pandemic-induced demand such as efficient home office setup and electrical fixtures has persisted. On the other end, families have continued to spend more time indoors, thereby improving the demand for home entertainment systems, home cleaning products like robot vacuums, smart lighting solutions, and energy-efficient appliances. Alongside, better consumer awareness, newer products and brand lines have fuelled the growth story further.

Demand for appliances promoting health and well-being such as air purifiers, juicers, smart fitness equipment, and kitchen appliances is facilitating a healthy lifestyle which is also reflected in consumer decision-making. Besides environmentally-conscious practices, recent ecommerce data, also proves that consumers prefer to buy electronics and appliances online, driven by convenience, competitive pricing, and wider product choices Growth in product categories catering to new-age millennial population such as gamers, smart-home seekers, and modern-kitchen and lifestyle enthusiasts only reflects the diversification of consumer interests and lifestyles.

Consumers are seeking products tailored to their individual needs and preferences. Customisation options, like personalised cooking settings or AI-powered recommendations, are gaining popularity. Technological innovations continue to shape the FMEG industry. Artificial intelligence, connected

devices and advanced materials are being incorporated into appliances, offering improved functionality, convenience, and user experience.

Lights, Sensors, Action!

Companies within the FMEG space, particularly wire manufacturers, have propelled their expansion by supplying crucial components, fostering innovation, and facilitating market reach. India’s burgeoning smart home technology is driven by an expanding middle class and rapid urbanisation, poised to generate a projected market revenue of US$6.5 billion in 2024.

Estimates indicate that the Smart Homes solutions market in India is experiencing a rapid 30 per cent year-on-year growth rate. At this pace, the market is anticipated to double its revenue every three years. Experts attribute this growth to the increasing emphasis on security, convenience, and energy efficiency in Smart Homes across India. The rising number of dual-income households, particularly in metropolitan areas, means homes are often vacant for significant periods, necessitating extensive home automation. This demand is supported by escalating family incomes.

Notably, key products like Smart Switches and Smart Door Locks are reshaping residential spaces. Smart Switches empower remote control functionalities, aiding energy efficiency and aligning with sustainability objectives. Security stands out as a major driver for home automation, notably with the growing popularity of smart door locks offered by brands like Godrej, Yale, and Finolex. These locks not only offer fingerprint access but also utilise Pincode, secure RFID Cards, and backup mechanical keys for secure entry. As the market broadens, these innovations are poised to redefine modern living, enhancing comfort, security, and sustainability.

Meanwhile, the Indian government’s focus on sustainable development and energy conservation has given rise to a wave of eco-friendly and energy-efficient electrical products. With initiatives such as the Ujala scheme promoting the adoption of LED lighting and the push for renewable energy sources, there is a growing market for FMEG products that align with environmental sustainability. Additionally, FAME subsidies to the EV sector or monetary benefits to the solar sector are factors that should enable FMEG to accelerate further.

Setting New Milestones

The FMEG sector complements India’s economic ascent as the country inches closer to the psychological $4 trillion mark. The sector also holds strong leverage in the world’s fastest-growing markets of the world (in line with the recent Q2 data). As the FMEG market continues its upward trajectory, several opportunities await manufacturers who are agile and attuned to market trends. Investing in research and development to create innovative, technologically advanced products will be key to staying competitive. Collaborations with technology companies and integration of smart solutions within traditional electrical products present avenues for differentiation.

Additionally, a strategic focus on sustainability and environmental consciousness will not only align with regulatory requirements but also resonate with the increasingly eco-conscious consumer base. Building strong partnerships with ecommerce platforms and investing in robust digital marketing strategies will be crucial for reaching a wider audience. The FMEG sector also has a propensity to contribute to India’s climate goals as well as sustainability measures. Some of these objectives could also be fulfilled by leveraging data analytics and artificial intelligence. While market experts have pointed out the intense competition and overlapping products as risks for the sector, there is also the silver lining for manufacturers to join the make-in-India exercise which in turn strengthens India’s strong consumption story.
