The state pollution control board cited excessive particulate emissions and inadequate monitoring data in its order directing the brewery to shut down
The Rajasthan State Pollution Control Board has revoked Carlsberg India’s consent to operate its Alwar brewery after particulate emissions at the facility were found to be nearly eight times the prescribed limit, according to a regulatory order. The closure comes as the Danish brewer prepares for a proposed USD 700 million initial public offering (IPO) of its Indian business, according to media report.
The order also flagged inadequate pollution-monitoring data, stating that the brewery had submitted only 35.12 per cent of the required data to the central regulator, against the mandatory threshold of 85 per cent.
The state board had granted the facility consent to operate on 24 April 2024, valid until 31 October 2028, subject to specified conditions. Following the withdrawal of the approval, the company has been directed to shut down the plant. The board also instructed the local electricity distribution company to disconnect its power supply and warned of further action under air and water pollution laws in case of non-compliance.
The action follows an inspection by the Central Pollution Control Board in July and its recommendation for closure in August.
According to report, the shutdown could affect beer supplies in Rajasthan, although the impact is expected to be limited as the peak summer season has ended. Carlsberg India, which sells Carlsberg and Tuborg beers, did not respond to a request for comment.
The regulatory action comes as the company moves towards a proposed IPO expected to raise around $700 million. Earlier this month, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi issued its observations on the offering, a key step in the listing process.
Sources cited in reports have indicated that Carlsberg India could seek a valuation of around Rs 30,000 crore. The company has not publicly confirmed the proposed valuation or listing timeline. In February, Carlsberg Group chief executive Jacob Arup-Andersen confirmed that the company was considering an IPO of its Indian business.
For the financial year ended March 2025, Carlsberg India reported net sales of Rs 8,939 crore and a net profit of Rs 443 crore.
