Condiment Brand Jhatak Raises Pre-seed Funding From Libas, Innovist Founders

Retail Funding Dips 34% In Q1FY24 2024: Report

The fresh capital will be used to strengthen Jhatak’s team, scale distribution and accelerate its expansion across key markets in India

Indonesian condiment brand Jhatak has notified the closure of its seed funding round. The round was led by Atul Rajani and Deeksha Rajani, Co-founders of The Be Life and Sidhant Keshwani, Founder and CEO of Libas. The fresh capital will be used to strengthen Jhatak’s team, scale distribution and accelerate its expansion across key markets in India.

The round also saw participation from Sifat Khurana, Founder and Chief Business Officer of Innovist, and Dhruv Bhasin, Co-founder of Arata and others. The company currently operates through its direct to consumer (D2C) platform and plans to expand across marketplaces, offline retail and business to business (B2B) channels, including restaurant partnerships.

“We saw a clear shift in how urban Indian consumers were approaching food, with growing openness towards global flavours and experimentation in everyday meals. At the same time, we saw an opportunity to introduce consumers to a relatively underexplored flavour category through authentic Indonesian sambal,” said Nadime, Co-founder, Jhatak.

The company is introducing authentic Indonesian sambal, a traditional chilli condiment, to Indian kitchens. The company sees a growing opportunity within India’s premium global condiments segment, driven by consumers seeking internationally inspired flavours, higher-quality pantry staples and convenient additions to everyday meals.

“What impressed us about Jhatak was the team’s ability to identify a whitespace in India’s growing international cuisine market and build an authentic product around it in a very short span of time. Their early traction through offline sales, repeat customer interest and ongoing conversations with specialty retailers demonstrated strong consumer curiosity for the category,” said Deeksha Rajani, Founder and CEO of The Be Life and Atul Rajani, Founder and Chief Formulation Officer, The Be Life.

As part of its growth plans, Jhatak will focus on expanding brand awareness, strengthening distribution and launching new product variants over the coming months. The company is also working towards scaling its operations and building a wider presence across Indian metros and Tier 1 and 2 cities.
