Ladakh Signs Deal To Export 1,000 MT Apricots

MoU with LuLu Group International aims to scale exports, reduce wastage, and improve returns for Ladakh’s apricot growers

The Ladakh administration has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to export 1,000 metric tonne of apricots to international markets this season, a sharp increase compared to around 1,500 kg exported over the past two years.

The move is part of efforts to expand the market for Ladakh’s GI-tagged Raktsey Karpo apricot and the Halman variety, both known for their taste and quality.

The agreement has been signed with UAE-based LuLu Group International, with support from the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority and the Ministry of Food Processing Industries. It was formalised by Bhupesh Chaudhary, Secretary (Horticulture), and Salim M.A., Group Director – Global Operations, LuLu Retail, in the presence of Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena.

Under the agreement, LuLu Retail will procure at least 1,000 metric tonne of apricots directly from farmers in Ladakh. The company will manage harvesting, sorting, processing, packaging, transport, and overseas marketing.

According to the statement, the arrangement is expected to reduce post-harvest losses, which have been common due to limitations in local sorting, cleaning, and packaging systems. It is also aimed at improving price realisation for farmers.

Speaking at a national workshop on apricot cultivation and value chains in Ladakh, Saxena said the agreement would help address key challenges faced by growers and support access to export markets, according to the issued statement.

He also indicated that similar efforts are being explored for other produce, including apples. Emphasising infrastructure needs, he called for the development of processing facilities in the region to reduce wastage and improve value addition.

Separately, the administration is considering introducing a dedicated ecommerce platform for Ladakh to help farmers access wider markets.nDuring the visit, the Lieutenant Governor also reviewed stalls displaying horticulture, handloom and handicraft products by self-help groups and local entrepreneurs.
