Startups are revolutionising retail with personalisation, data-driven insights, and innovative strategies, challenging established brands, opine industry insiders
The Indian retail sector is undergoing a transformative phase as startups challenge traditional norms with innovative, personalised approaches to meet evolving customer needs. This shift was the focus of the panel discussion, “Disruptive Retail: How Startups Are Shaking Up The Status Quo,” at Building Blocks of Retail Summit, organised by BW Retail World.
The panel, moderated by Resham Suhail, Editorial Lead at BW Disrupt, brought together six dynamic entrepreneurs redefining the retail market: Sahil Nayar, Founder of Mila Beauty; Himanshu Adlakha, Co-founder of Winston; Gagan Anand, Founder and Director of Scuzo Ice ‘O’ Magic; Natwar Agrawal, Co-founder and CEO of Bacca Bucci; Akshay Oswal, Founder and CEO of Oceglow; and Kamaljit Singh, Chief Data Scientist and Managing Partner at Kie Square.
Personalisation Redefines Retail
Sahil Nayar of Mila Beaute emphasised the power of personalization in the beauty industry. “People want products made just for them. We use data to create skincare solutions that feel personal, and that’s something traditional brands struggle to match,” he said.
Connecting with Gen Z
Himanshu Adlakha of Winston highlighted the importance of resonating with younger audiences. “Gen Z wants to stand out and feel understood. At Winston, we focus on creating products that match their style and values,” he explained.
Innovation Meets Customer Delight
Gagan Anand of Scuzo Ice ‘O’ Magic shared insights into blending innovation with memorable customer experiences. “People love trying something new and exciting, especially in food. We use technology to make the experience even more enjoyable,” he said.
Data-Driven Decisions
Kamaljit Singh stressed the role of data in driving business success. “Big data helps businesses understand what customers want. At Kie Square, we help startups use this data to grow faster and smarter,” he shared.
Affordable Luxury
Natwar Agrawal of Bacca Bucci and Akshay Oswal of Oceglow focused on delivering high-quality products at competitive prices. Agrawal said, “Customers love luxury that doesn’t break the bank,” while Oswal added, “We make luxury skincare that’s affordable and effective. This is what modern customers are looking for.”
The Future of Retail
The panel concluded that startups are not merely competitors but pioneers reshaping the retail landscape. Their agility and customer-centric strategies are proving to be effective tools in challenging established players.
“Startups are rewriting the rules of retail,” said Resham Suhail as the session wrapped up. “They’re showing that disruption can create amazing opportunities for growth.”
As customer preferences evolve, startups are poised to lead the way, offering innovative products and meaningful experiences that resonate with the modern consumer. The future of Indian retail, as the panelists suggested, is bright and brimming with possibilities.
