Delhivery Tests Autonomous Logistics Drone In Deoria, Boosting Rural Connectivity

India’s largest logistics integrator showcases a successful VTOL drone mission in Uttar Pradesh, signalling a major leap for high-speed rural delivery

Delhivery, India’s largest fully integrated logistics services provider, has successfully completed testing of its autonomous Vertical Take-off and Landing (VTOL) drone technology in Deoria, Uttar Pradesh. The demonstration—executed by Delhivery Robotics India Private Limited, a Delhivery subsidiary—was witnessed by Shri Shashank Mani, Hon’ble Member of Parliament from Deoria.

The centrepiece of the showcase was a live, pre-programmed 12 km autonomous drone mission, where a Delhivery drone transported medical supplies across rural terrain. A journey that typically takes up to 40 minutes by road was completed in just 12 minutes, underscoring the transformative potential of aerial logistics for India’s last-mile delivery ecosystem.

Praising the innovation, Shashank Mani said, ““Uttar Pradesh is rapidly evolving into the industrial engine of New India. Today’s demonstration by Delhivery in Deoria Lok Sabha is a testament to how technology can be leveraged to improve the ‘Ease of Living’ for our rural citizens. We welcome Delhivery’s initiative to explore drone corridors in my constituency, aligned with our vision for a digitally connected and innovative Uttar Pradesh.”

The drone used in the demonstration is part of Delhivery’s new prototype fleet, built on proprietary, indigenous technology. Designed for India’s diverse geographies and weather conditions, the VTOL aircraft can carry payloads of up to 5 kg and cover 60–90 km on a single charge. Its hybrid design enables vertical take-off like a helicopter, followed by efficient horizontal flight like a fixed-wing aircraft.

A more advanced platform—with a payload capacity of up to 20 kg and greater localised content—is currently under development. Explaining the significance of the trial, Nikhil Ummat, Head of Engineering at Delhivery, said, “Our technology is built for the realities of Indian geography. The ability to bypass traffic and road infrastructure allows us to turn ‘next-day’ delivery into ‘next-hour’ delivery for urgent shipments. Deoria represents the perfect pilot location—an expanding urban hub serving a vast and often inaccessible rural population.”

Beyond speed and connectivity, Delhivery highlighted that the emerging drone logistics ecosystem could unlock substantial job creation—including roles for drone pilots, maintenance engineers, and ground operations teams—particularly in Tier-II and Tier-III cities.

Delhivery is India’s largest fully-integrated logistics services provider, covering more than 18,850 pin codes nationwide. The company offers express parcel, PTL and TL freight, cross-border solutions, supply chain services, and logistics technology tools. Delhivery has fulfilled over 4.0 billion shipments to date and serves more than 48,000 customers, including major e-commerce platforms, SMEs, and enterprise brands.
