Khetika Invests Rs 20 Cr In Makhana, Targets Rs 500 Cr Revenue

Khetika has commissioned a 35,000 sq. ft. processing facility in Patna with an annual capacity of 500 metric tonnes as it expands its flavoured makhana range and targets a Rs 500 crore business in three years

Clean-food brand Khetika is investing Rs 20 crore across its makhana business as it seeks to expand the Bihar-origin fox nut into a wider range of packaged snacks. The investment covers sourcing, manufacturing, product development, marketing, distribution and exports. As part of the expansion, the company has introduced five flavoured makhana variants and commissioned a 35,000 sq. ft. processing facility in Patna, Bihar, with an annual production capacity of 500 metric tonnes.

The new facility will undertake multiple stages of production, including cleaning, grading, roasting, popping, flavouring and packaging. It is the second new facility Khetika has commissioned in India this year, taking its total number of facilities to seven. The company plans to use the additional capacity to increase production and develop more makhana-based offerings, including chips, snack mixes and new flavours.

Khetika’s initial flavoured makhana range includes Korean Kimchi, Peri Peri, Lime & Chilli, Himalayan Pink Salt, and Salt & Pepper. Prices start at Rs 50, with the products aimed at expanding makhana consumption beyond its conventional uses into the packaged snacking category.

The company procures Mithila Makhana directly from farmers across Bihar, including the districts of Purnia, Katihar, Darbhanga, Sitamarhi and Madhubani. Locating the processing facility in Patna brings manufacturing closer to its sourcing network, which Khetika expects to help improve quality control and traceability. It also plans to set up a SAATHI Centre in the sourcing region to strengthen engagement with farmers.

Khetika estimates India’s makhana market at Rs 10,000 crore and aims to secure a 5 per cent share within three years, translating into a business opportunity of Rs 500 crore. The company expects makhana to account for around 20 per cent of its overall revenue as it expands the category and builds distribution across domestic and overseas markets.

International expansion is also part of the company’s plans, with the US, Europe and the Middle East identified as target markets. The new products will be distributed through e-commerce platforms, quick-commerce services, retail outlets and Khetika’s own website.

Beyond makhana, Khetika is developing a broader packaged-snacking portfolio that includes seed-based and date-based products. The move is intended to widen its presence in the packaged food market while building on demand for convenient snack formats.
