Amazon Removes ‘Shri Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad’ Sweets Following CCPA Inquiry

Amazon's Karigar Mela To Showcase India's Sustainable Crafts

Following a notification from the Central Consumer Protection Authority, Amazon deleted sweets sold under the name ‘Shri Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad’.

The highlighted goods include ‘Raghupati Ghee Ladoo,’ ‘Khoya Khobi Ladoo,’ ‘Ghee Bundi Ladoo,’ and ‘Desi Cow Milk Peda.’

The company also stated that Amazon.in is a third-party marketplace where sellers, not Amazon, list and sell items to customers under applicable Indian laws and Amazon guidelines.

The CCPA on Friday sent a show-cause notice to Amazon Seller Services, which runs the ecommerce giant’s India marketplace, over the sale of food products under the name ‘Shri Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad’ on the platform.

The authority had asked Amazon to respond within seven days to the notice.

On Friday, the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) filed a complaint against the marketplace, alleging that it was engaged in deceptive trade practices with one of its sellers exploiting “religious sentiments for commercial gains”.

In its complaint, submitted to consumer affairs minister Piyush Goyal, the CAIT also alleged that these food products were not authentic prasad or religious offerings, from the Ram temple in Ayodhya.
