The government will judge the current import control system for specific IT hardware goods like laptops and tablets after assessing the import data it is monitoring after September, the news agency PTI reported.
In October of last year, India implemented an import management system that requires importers of certain items to get government authorisation.
The technology is designed to monitor laptop, tablet, and computer shipments into the nation without disrupting market supply or imposing a burdensome licencing policy.
Importers may apply for numerous authorisations, which will be valid until 30 September 2024. Authorisations will be provided for any number of import consignments until September of next year.
On 1 November 2023, the government approved 110 of the 111 applications, including those of Apple, Dell, and Lenovo, which requested approval for the importation of major IT hardware goods valued at almost USD 10 billion on the first day of the new system’s implementation.
India is also supporting local manufacturing of these items, and has taken many efforts, including launching a production-linked incentive (PLI) programme for large-scale electronics manufacturing.
The words are significant since the US discussed the subject of India’s new import criteria for laptops and tablets on 12 January during the Trade Policy Forum (TPF) meeting, asking New Delhi to guarantee that the present online system and related laws do not impede trade in the industry.
