Crepdog Crew Bets On Culture, Not Just Sneakers

Co-founder Anchit Kapil discusses how trust, curation and community have transformed Crepdog Crew from a sneaker resale platform into one of India’s fastest-growing streetwear and culture-led retail businesses

What began as an Instagram page authenticating sneaker resales has evolved into one of India’s most influential streetwear platforms. Crepdog Crew (CDC) has steadily expanded beyond sneakers into homegrown fashion labels, international brands and its own product lines, while building a loyal community around youth culture.

In this conversation with BW Retail, Anchit Kapil, Co-founder, Crepdog Crew, talks about the company’s evolution, the opportunities in India’s premium streetwear market, the importance of trust and authentication, and why the brand sees itself as a cultural demand engine rather than a conventional retailer.

Crepdog Crew has evolved from a sneaker community into a broader streetwear, culture and retail platform. How has the business model changed since the brand’s inception? What are the key growth engines driving the brand today?
We didn’t begin with a conventional business plan; we started by building trust. In 2020, Crepdog Crew was simply an Instagram page focused on authentic sneaker resale, earning credibility through one genuine transaction at a time. That trust became the foundation of everything we’ve built since.

While our mission has remained unchanged, our scope has expanded considerably. We moved from sneakers into homegrown brands, followed by international labels and eventually our own in-house products. Every expansion was driven by our community’s interests rather than financial targets or investor expectations.

Today, we no longer view ourselves as just a retailer. We see ourselves as a demand engine. Retailers typically sell what already exists, whereas we help shape what’s relevant before the market follows. That’s the difference between merely stocking products and building culture around them.

Our growth today is powered by three pillars: trusted curation, immersive physical retail experiences and nurturing homegrown brands that we’ve helped evolve from niche labels into consumer favourites.

The sneaker and streetwear market has attracted growing interest from global brands, retailers and investors. How do you assess the market’s current maturity, and what opportunities does Crepdog Crew see?
India’s sneaker and streetwear market is still in its infancy, and that’s precisely what makes it exciting.

Interest from global brands is increasing rapidly, but interest alone isn’t enough. The ecosystem still lacks robust authentication, thoughtful curation, compelling storytelling and retail experiences that genuinely resonate with consumers.

Much of the market remains highly transactional, with platforms competing primarily on discounts and assortment. That creates a race to the bottom because consumers begin making decisions based on price rather than trust.

We identified an opportunity to become both the filter and the validator for consumers. When a product is available on Crepdog Crew, customers know it has been carefully curated and authenticated. Building that level of trust is difficult to replicate and remains one of our biggest competitive strengths.

As Crepdog Crew scales, how do you preserve the exclusivity and community-driven nature of sneaker culture while growing into a mainstream business?
Every culture-led business eventually faces that question.

We believe exclusivity and scale are not contradictory—they’re sequential. You don’t dilute culture to achieve growth. Instead, culture should naturally attract growth.

Each city we’ve entered, whether Delhi, Mumbai or Hyderabad, has been approached differently. Every store reflects the character of its local community rather than following a standardised template.

The moment we prioritise volume over relevance, we risk losing the trust that built the brand. That’s why our focus remains firmly on strengthening relationships with our community. Sustainable scale follows naturally when trust remains intact.

What role do physical retail, e-commerce, authentication and community building play in your long-term growth strategy?
Physical retail is where the Crepdog Crew identity truly comes alive. Our stores aren’t simply transactional spaces—they’re designed to create memorable experiences and give people reasons to visit beyond making a purchase. That’s something digital platforms alone cannot replicate.

Ecommerce enables us to reach consumers across the country, but the trust behind our online business is built through those offline experiences.

Authentication is absolutely non-negotiable in our category. A single counterfeit product can permanently damage customer confidence, so we treat authentication as core infrastructure rather than an operational function.

Community is equally fundamental. We don’t see it as a marketing tool; it’s our primary source of demand. We invest in our community the same way many businesses invest in supply chains because that’s where relevance begins.

Looking ahead, where do you see the biggest opportunities for Crepdog Crew over the next three to five years?
We see the opportunity as category-defining rather than incremental. India still doesn’t have a platform that truly owns premium youth culture in the way we believe Crepdog Crew can.

Our priorities are clear.

First, we’ll continue investing in our in-house brands because they represent both stronger margins and the clearest expression of our creative identity.

Second, we’ll expand our physical presence into cities where youth culture is already thriving but remains underserved.

Third, we’ll deepen partnerships with brands that genuinely align with our vision. We’d rather collaborate with fewer partners who share our philosophy than compromise our positioning through excessive expansion.

Ultimately, our ambition extends beyond becoming India’s largest multi-brand retailer. We want Crepdog Crew to become the platform that defines what’s relevant in Indian youth culture—and eventually take that model to global markets.

Are there one or two brands on the platform that have been particularly important in building your community?
I wouldn’t attribute our success to any single brand. What consumers trust is the curation that Crepdog Crew provides. People come to us because they know they’ll discover something new, authentic and culturally relevant.

Today, we work with more than 45 homegrown brands, each with its own identity, creative vision and stage of growth.

Success looks different for every label. One brand may sell thousands of Rs 3,000 T-shirts, while another may produce a limited run of Rs 40,000 pieces that sell out immediately. Both are equally successful within their respective categories.

We see these brands as creative artists rather than simply commercial partners. Each has its own story, and none has reached its full potential yet. Over the next few years, I believe many of these homegrown labels will become household names, and we’re proud to be helping them on that journey.
