Okhai Unveils Contemporary Ajrakh Collection Inspired By Heritage Craft

Tata Chemicals CSR initiative Okhai has launched a new Ajrakh collection in collaboration with artisan designer Mubin Khatri, blending traditional textile craftsmanship with modern silhouettes and sustainable practices

Okhai, the artisan-led lifestyle brand established under Tata Chemicals Society for Rural Development (TCSRD), has launched a contemporary Ajrakh collection that reimagines one of India’s oldest textile traditions for modern consumers.

Developed over eight months in collaboration with artisan designer Mubin Khatri and his team in Dhamadka, Kutch, the collection features 19 garments inspired by the centuries-old Ajrakh craft, believed to trace its origins to the Indus Valley Civilisation.

The collection combines heritage craftsmanship with contemporary design sensibilities through experimental print placements, modern silhouettes and innovative textile techniques. Crafted using breathable cotton and cotton twill fabrics, the line incorporates natural dyes and traditional methods such as pothai, a hand-painting technique using natural colours.

Moving beyond conventional block-printing approaches, the collection experiments with independent use of outlines and filler blocks to create fresher, more versatile patterns. It also introduces Ajrakh motifs on twill cotton denim, offering a more contemporary interpretation of the traditional craft form.

Speaking about the launch, Manorath Dhillon, who currently heads Okhai and has worked extensively with Indian crafts, said the collection aims to preserve the authenticity of Ajrakh while adapting it for contemporary wardrobes.

“Ajrakh is a craft deeply rooted in history and community. Through this collection, we wanted to explore how it can evolve for contemporary wardrobes while preserving its authenticity,” Dhillon said.

Sustainability remains central to the collection’s design philosophy. The garments are crafted using natural fabrics and dyes, while existing printing blocks have been thoughtfully reworked to minimise material waste and promote responsible production practices.

With the launch of the Ajrakh collection, Okhai continues its focus on supporting rural artisans and preserving traditional Indian crafts through contemporary product innovation.

Founded in 2002 by the Tata Chemicals Society for Rural Development, Okhai works with rural artisans and women-led self-help groups across India to create handcrafted apparel, accessories and home décor products that merge traditional artistry with modern design aesthetics.

The Ajrakh collection is currently available across India exclusively through Okhai’s official website.
