In an attempt to support the well-being of delivery associates across the country, Amazon India has introduced ‘Project Ashray’ for setting up dedicated rest points across major cities. The company has undertaken the initiative in partnership with Udyasa Foundation and the country’s first Ashray centre was inaugurated on 23 August 2024 in Gurugram by the India Country Director at International Labour Organisation (ILO), Michiko Miyamoto.

Under the initiative, Amazon India plans to set up five rest points or pilot centres in Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi NCR where the company has a high number of drivers. The rest stops will be available to all the delivery associates across the ecommerce ecosystem.

The Ashray centres will have various amenities like washrooms, seating, drinking water as well as charging stations. As per the company’s statement, these centres will have the capacity to accommodate 15 people at a time and will be operational from 9 am to 9 pm throughout the year. The company will not charge money for using the centres. However, the rest points will be limited to 30 minutes per visit.

Amazon India plans to add the locations of Ashray centres on google maps to ensure easy access by the delivery associates. The centres will have the parking facility.

“Project Ashray is a significant part of our broader efforts to improve driver experience and well-being. By providing dedicated rest points with essential amenities, we aim to ensure that all delivery associates across ecommerce ecosystem have the best possible and most comfortable environment while they work,” said Abhinav Singh, Vice President-Operations, Amazon India.

In the coming months, the company plans to setup such centres in as many locations as possible. The facilities will include guarded restrooms to ensure women’s safety. Other amenities include shelter during monsoons or heatwaves, first-aid support as well as providing electric two wheeler charging facility at the government subsidised prices.
