In a sign of rising quality standards in India’s toy market, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has found 91 per cent of the 17,860 samples of toys in line with the quality control order since its implementation in January 2021, news agency PTI reported.
The report noted that 16,240 samples out of 17,860 samples tested so far have been found in compliance with the norms. BIS has tested 537 samples in the current financial year (FY26) till 17 June, as per the report, which added that around 98 per cent of the tested samples were in compliance.
BIS has formulated and published Indian Standards for toys covering physical, chemical, and electrical safety requirements. The data since 2021 indicates an upward trend in surveillance activity. The report highlighted that since the implementation of the Toy (Quality Control) Order in January 2021, the bureau has carried out extensive enforcement activities.
The report highlighted that the order mandates that all toys sold in India, whether manufactured locally or imported, must comply with seven specified Indian standards and carry the ISI mark under a valid BIS licence.
According to the latest data, 1,640 BIS -certified toy industries are there in India, the report added. Out of this, 1,165 licences are issued for non-electronic toys and 475 for electric toys.
