Licenses and no-objection certificates for businesses such as hotels, guest houses, restaurants, motels, and others will now be issued by urban local bodies
In an effort to address longstanding concerns of the business community regarding delays associated with the police-based licensing system, the Delhi government has decided to transfer the responsibility for issuing licenses of seven key business categories from Delhi Police to local civic bodies.
According to the revised framework, licenses and no-objection certificates for businesses such as hotels, guest houses, restaurants, motels, swimming pools, video game parlours, discotheques, auditoriums, and amusement parks will now be issued by urban local bodies.
Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena issued an order to relieve Delhi Police of such responsibilities. This reform also echoes the centre’s directive to relieve police from non-core duties, ensuring their energy and resources focus on law and order, security, and crime control.
“This is a remarkable step toward enhancing ease of doing business and aligns perfectly with Prime Minister Modi’s vision. By eliminating the police’s role in the business licensing system, we are moving toward a transparent, corruption-free, and efficient administration that will empower entrepreneurs and boost economic activity,” highlighted Praveen Khandelwal, Member of Parliament from Chandni Chowk and Secretary General of Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT).
Khandelwal added that this move will benefit nearly four lakh small and large enterprises in the city. He mentioned that this decision will not only eliminate unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles but also allow the police to fully focus on their core duties.
