The turnover threshold for registration has also been increased to Rs 1.5 crore from Rs 12 lakh
As part of its efforts to bring reforms towards the ease of doing business, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has said that its licenses and registration certificates will now have perpetual validity, eliminating the need for renewals.
In an order issued on Friday, the food regulator FSSAI said that the turnover threshold for registration has also been increased to Rs 1.5 crore from Rs 12 lakh. The order is related to provisions for addressing dual compliance requirements for registration of street food vendors, perpetual validity of FSSAI registration and license subject to risk-based inspections and enabling provisions for specifying turnover thresholds and other categorisation criteria by the food authority.
The turnover threshold limit for state license has now been set between above Rs 1.5 crore and Rs 50 crore. On the other hand, the turnover now needs to be above Rs 50 crore to obtain a central license. This revised turnover thresholds will come into effect from 01 April 2026.
In a separate development, FSSAI issued an advisory regarding mandatory registration/license by milk producers (other than members of dairy cooperative societies) and milk vendors. The authority said that all milk producers (other than those who are registered members of a dairy cooperative society under cooperative societies act and supplies or sells the entire milk to the society) and milk vendors are hereby advised to mandatorily register themselves with FSSAI, before commencing or continuing their operations.
“It is also advised to inspect milk chillers (used by the milk producer/milk vendors) periodically to ensure proper storage temperature and necessary requirements of the chiller are maintained at all time, so as to prevent spoilage and safeguard public health. Appropriate action may be initiated in cases of non-compliance,” the authority noted.
FSSAI has conducted over 56,000 risk-based inspections in three years to strengthen food safety oversight, with over 5.18 lakh enforcement food samples analysed across states and union territories. In the states, UTs, 2,997 food safety officers and 668 designated officers are working.
To strengthen the food regulatory ecosystem in the country, FSSAI has notified 252 food testing laboratories for analysis of food samples and 24 referral food laboratories for the analysis of appellate samples.
