Shein, Reliance Eye Selling India-made Clothes Overseas Within 12 Months: Report

Shein Sending More Goods To U.S. Warehouses To Speed Up Shipping

The report states that Shein initially wants to list India-made clothes on British and US websites

In addition to rapidly expanding their Indian supplier base, fashion retailer Shein and partner Reliance Retail is looking to begin overseas sales of India-made Shein-branded clothes within six months to a year, Reuters reported.

The ecommerce firm has been in talks with Reliance Retail since before the United States imposed tariffs on Chinese imports, resulting in a greater need to diversify sourcing. The report added that the goal is to raise Indian suppliers from 150 to 1,000 within a year.

The report noted that Reliance has contracted 150 garment manufacturers and is in talks with an additional 400, with the goal being 1,000 Indian factories making Shein-branded clothes within 12 months for both the domestic and overseas markets. Shein first wants to list India-made clothes on British and US websites, the report added.

After its app was banned in India in 2020 due to the Centre’s action against China-linked companies, Shein returned in February under a licensing deal with the Reliance Industries arm, which began selling Shein-branded clothes produced in local factories, as per the report. Shein has licensed its brand for domestic use to Reliance, which looks after the manufacturing, sales, supply and operations in the Indian market, the report highlighted.

Reuters highlighted that the expansion in the country reflects the interest in India from global giants like Walmart and others in the fashion and retail sectors, especially the companies looking for suppliers outside China.
