The cost of veg thali rose to Rs 32.7 in November, while the same for non-veg thali stood at Rs 61.5
Due to an increase in the prices of tomato and potato, the cost of home-cooked vegetarian thali rose 7 per cent year-on-year in November, as per a report by Crisil. On the other hand, the cost of non-veg thali rose by 2 per cent for the month. The cost of veg thali stood at Rs 32.7 during the month, while the same for non-veg thali stood at Rs 61.5.
According to the market intelligence and analytics (MI&A) by Crisil, the price of tomato increased 35 per cent on-year to Rs 53 per kilogram (kg) from Rs 40 per kg in November 2023. The price of potato increased 50 per cent on-year on a low base to Rs 37 per kg from Rs 25 per kg in November 2023 due to a 20 per cent on-year decline in arrivals amid low yield following late blight infestation in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat.
The report stated that the price of pulses rose 10 per cent on-year due to lower opening and pipeline stocks. Prices are expected to dip once fresh arrivals begin in December. Adding to the cost, vegetable oil prices rose 13 per cent on-year due to import duty hike, coupled with the festive and wedding season demand.
As far as the non-veg thali is concerned, the estimated decline of 3 per cent year-on-year (YoY) in broiler prices, which account for 50 per cent of the non-veg thali cost, arrested the rise in cost.
On-month, the cost of veg thali declined 2 per cent during the month, while that of non-veg thali remained flat. Tomato prices declined 17 per cent on-month, while rise in prices of vegetable oil, onion and potato by 4 per cent, 4 per cent and 1 per cent on-month, respectively, arrested the further decline in thali cost.
The report further mentioned that for the non-veg thali, an estimated 2 per cent rise in broiler prices led to stable thali cost.
