The cost of a home-cooked veg thali now stands at Rs 31.2, while the cost for the non-veg thali came down to Rs 59.3 in August 2024, as per the Crisil report
Driven by the sharp decline in the prices of tomatoes and broilers, the costs of both veg and non-veg thalis declined on –year as well as on-month basis in August 2024. As per the Crisil Market Intelligence and Analytics, the cost of home-cooked veg thalis declined by 8 per cent and non-veg thalis reported an even steeper decline of 12 per cent on a YoY basis. On-month, the cost of veg and non-veg thalis declined 4 per cent and 3 per cent, respectively.
The decline in costs of veg thalis was attributed to the decline in prices of tomatoes. Due to fresh arrivals from Southern and Western States, the prices of tomatoes declined 51 per cent YoY, from Rs 102 per kilogram (kg) in August 2023 to Rs 50 per kg in August 2024. The prices fell 23 per cent on-month from Rs 66 per kg in July 2024 to around Rs 50 per kg in August 2024.
Another major contributor to the decline was the drop in fuel costs, which reported a 27 per cent drop from Rs 1,103 in August 2023 to Rs 803 for a 14.2 kg LPG cylinder in Delhi in March 2024. In addition, the prices of vegetable oil, chilli and cumin, which form around 5 per cent of the veg thali cost, eased 6 per cent, 30 per cent and 58 per cent YoY, respectively.
Prices of broiler, which account for around 50 per cent cost of the non-veg thali, declined by around 13 per cent on a YoY basis. This led to a sharper dip in non-veg thali costs. However, onion and potato retail prices reported an uptick of Rs 15 per kg and Rs 13 per kg, respectively.
The cost of a home-cooked veg thali now stands at Rs 31.2, while the cost for the non-veg thali came down to Rs 59.3 in August 2024, as per the Crisil report.
