Delhi HC Allows Patanjali To Refer Rival Chyawanprash As Ordinary

However, the company has been asked to remove a reference to a phrase where it says that chyawanprash by the competing companies was ‘made with 40 herbs’

While directing Patanjali to remove a specific claim about Dabur’s chyawanprash, the Delhi High Court has allowed the company to go ahead with ‘why settle for ordinary chyawanprash’ in its advertisements.

Reports noted that Patanjali has been directed not to target Dabur in its ads. The company has been asked to remove a reference to a phrase where it says that chyawanprash by the competing companies was ‘made with 40 herbs’. A division bench of justices Hari Shankar and Om Prakash Shukla examined the appeal.

The court added that enlightened consumers were not likely to abandon products of Dabur due to Patanjali’s use of the word ‘ordinary’. The reports emphasised that Patanjali had appealed against an order which directed it to remove the parts of the ad which allegedly disparaged the chyawanprash of Dabur.

Dabur raised objections that the company’s advertisement referred to a 40-herb chyawanprash as ordinary, a clear reference to its product. The company also highlighted that the commercial of Patanjali stated that those who do not have the knowledge of Ayurved and Vedic traditions cannot manufacture the original chyawanprash.

In a separate development, Dabur has reduced the prices of products across categories, emphasising that the company is committed to passing on the benefits of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate cuts to the consumers.

Making the essential goods more affordable, the company has slashed the prices of products across brands including the Dabur Vatika, Chyawanprakash, Real Fruit Juice, Hajmola. In a revised price list issued, the company informed that Dabur Sarso Amla oil will now cost Rs 55 for the 170 ml pack, a reduction of Rs 14. Dabur Vatika hair oil of 275 ml will see a price reduction of Rs 28 and will retail at Rs 207.
