Food regulator urges consumers to stay alert as synthetic colours in turmeric raise safety concerns, promotes simple water test under Eat Right India
Food safety concerns have once again come into focus, with Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) urging consumers to remain vigilant about adulteration in commonly used spices, particularly turmeric.
In a recent post on X, the regulator flagged the risks associated with artificial colours in food and demonstrated a quick, at-home method to check the purity of turmeric powder. “Artificial colours have no place in a healthy diet. A quick water test can reveal the truth about turmeric powder. Always check before you use,” the authority said, as part of its ongoing #EatRightIndia campaign.
Turmeric, a staple across Indian households, is widely valued for both its culinary use and health benefits. However, concerns have been mounting over the increasing incidence of adulteration, with synthetic colours and other harmful substances being added to enhance appearance.
To help consumers identify such contamination, FSSAI has outlined a simple water-based test that can be performed in a matter of minutes. The method involves adding a small quantity of turmeric powder to a glass of water and allowing it to sit undisturbed. According to the regulator, pure turmeric will settle gradually at the bottom, leaving behind a faint yellow tint, whereas adulterated turmeric tends to release colour rapidly, turning the water a bright, intense yellow almost instantly.
The initiative is part of a broader push by the food safety authority to promote awareness and encourage safer consumption practices. Through its “Eat Right India” movement, FSSAI has been advocating for healthier food choices while equipping consumers with easy tools to assess food quality without requiring specialised testing.
The regulator has also advised consumers to exercise caution while purchasing spices, recommending that they opt for trusted brands or verified local sources, avoid unusually bright-coloured powders, and check for proper certification on packaging.
With food adulteration emerging as a persistent concern, authorities emphasise that simple checks and informed choices can play a crucial role in reducing health risks. As FSSAI noted, taking a few extra minutes to verify what goes into everyday meals can make a significant difference in safeguarding long-term health.
