Apple Opens Up iPhones, iPads To Other App Stores In Response To EU Regulations

Tech major Apple will allow iPhones and iPads access to other app stores to comply with European Union (EU) technology regulations.

The company announced this on Friday following which several government agencies in the EU and other regions have expressed worries regarding security threats.

Starting from 7th March, Apple under the Digital Markets Act (DMA) will be offering alternative application stores on iPhones that would allow developers to opt out of using its in-app payment system, which charges 30 per cent of fees.

Apple said that the adjustments align with EU regulations and highlighted that the act of sideloading and installing apps on a mobile device without using its designated app store has raised worries among government agencies and users within and outside the EU.

Meanwhile, reports state that this new practice is a form of reform that would help lawmakers open up the market for apps.

In a statement, Apple said agencies serving essential functions such as defense, banking and emergency services have reached out to it regarding the recent modifications.

Apple said the agencies were looking towards the assurance that could prevent government employees from sideloading apps onto the Centre’s purchased iPhones. Additionally, the company mentioned that several other organisations are planning to block sideloading on every device they manage.

Apple also stated that an EU government agency mentioned it lacked the resources to review and approve apps for its devices and therefore intended to depend on the company and its App Store for app vetting due to the trust in their comprehensive vetting process.

At present, Apple has not disclosed any information regarding the quantity of agencies affected and the specific countries in which they are situated.
