The latest data from the commerce department revealed that China’s total shipments of personal computers and laptops to India stood at 89.4 per cent in December, which when compared to the period from April to December was found to be at 76.4 per cent in FY 2024.
December spelled a different story for China’s imports in regions like Singapore and Hong Kong, witnessing a decline of 66.1 per cent and 41.8 per cent respectively. These smaller contributors accounted for USD 11.6 million and USD 13.6 million of shipments to India in December.
In November, as soon as the Indian government’s online monitoring system for imported electronic hardware items went live, imports from China dropped by 14 per cent. The overall decline, on the other hand, reached 17 per cent.
Last year, Centre also introduced plans to categorise products in the IT hardware segment, which included laptops, tablets, all-in-one personal computers, ultra-small form factor computers and servers, under the restricted label. Consequently, this surged the imports of laptops and tablets in September and October by 41.8 per cent and 29.7 per cent, respectively.
Meanwhile, with India’s monitoring system in place, the government can now easily access data about specific products coming in from different sources.
