The Sankrail facility in Howrah will process up to 15 lakh litres of milk daily and produce a range of value-added dairy products
Dairy cooperative Amul is set to begin work on its proposed Rs 700 crore dairy processing facility in West Bengal, with the foundation stone expected to be laid on 14 June. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is likely to attend the event.
The project, coming up in Sankrail in Howrah district, is among the largest investments announced for the state’s dairy sector in recent months. The facility will be developed on 15 acres of land and will manufacture value-added dairy products, including dahi, mishti doi, yoghurt, lassi and buttermilk.
According to media reports, Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), said the company had secured 15 acres of land for the project, which would entail an investment of Rs 700 crore.
The plant will be located within the Sankrail Food Park and will have the capacity to process up to 15 lakh litres of milk daily. The facility is expected to produce around 10 lakh kg of dairy products every day, media reports stated.
Expansion In East
The investment proposal was first unveiled during the Bengal Global Business Summit 2025 in Kolkata, where Mehta outlined Amul’s expansion plans for eastern India.
Following a recent meeting with Amul executives, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari highlighted the project’s potential contribution to the state’s economy and dairy industry in a post on X.
“Managing Director of Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) Shri Jayen Mehta and Kairana District Co-operative Milk Producers Union and Amul Dairy chief Amit Vyas today gave a courtesy call. Participated in the meeting today. In future, investment and business expansion of a renowned organisation like Amul in West Bengal will play a significant role in economic development of the state, increase in employment and development of the dairy industry,” he wrote.
In a separate post, Adhikari said, “The meeting stressed on the expansion of the organisation, investment potential and development of the dairy sector in West Bengal. Detailed discussion took place. The discussion was very fruitful and there will be mutual cooperation between West Bengal and East in the future.”
The proposed facility is expected to strengthen milk procurement networks, support local dairy farmers and generate employment opportunities. The project will also bolster Amul’s presence in eastern India as the cooperative continues to expand its processing and distribution infrastructure across the region.
