In the third quarter of 2023, Samsung, the South Korea-based tech giant, has secured over 80 per cent of the smartphone market share in its home country, as reported by Counterpoint data and noted by Yonhap news agency.
Despite a decline in demand for high-end smartphones and other gadgets, Samsung achieved this dominance, selling approximately 3.4 million smartphones in South Korea during the July to September period.
The report indicates a 10 per cent decrease in numbers compared to the same period the previous year. The popularity of Samsung’s latest flip and foldable devices, namely the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and the Galaxy Z Fold 5, played a significant role in the company’s increased market share.
During this quarter, Apple also experienced a rise in its market share in South Korea, reaching 15 per cent.
Notably, this growth occurred even after the introduction of the iPhone 15 series a month later in the South Korean market. The remaining 1 per cent market share is attributed to other smartphone makers such as Motorola.
The report suggests that South Korean users were drawn to the distinctive features of the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5 models, contributing to Samsung’s dominance with an 84 per cent share of the entire market.
