The Supreme Court of India has directed Patanjali Ayurveda, led by Baba Ramdev, to refrain from making false claims against modern medicines and vaccines, based on a petition filed by the Indian Medical Association (IMA).
The court has warned Patanjali of substantial penalties, potentially reaching up to Rs 1 crore, if it persists in making false claims about cures.
During the hearing, the court emphasised the seriousness of the matter and cautioned Patanjali against disseminating misleading information. The court’s order is a response to the IMA’s concerns about Patanjali’s advertisement released in July of the previous year. The ad controversially stated, “Misconceptions spread by Allopathy: Save yourself and the country from the misconceptions spread by Pharma and Medical Industry.”
In addition to cautioning Patanjali, the court has called upon the government to present a proposal addressing the issue of misleading medical advertisements.
As the case progresses, it is expected to set a precedent for handling instances of misinformation in the healthcare industry.
