Ecommerce giant expands fulfilment, sorting and last-mile infrastructure ahead of festive season, taking storage capacity to 64 million cubic feet and creating 160,000 seasonal work opportunities
Amazon is set to undertake its biggest-ever expansion of its operations network in India ahead of the festive season, adding 20 new fulfilment centres, six sort centres and 150 last-mile delivery stations across the country.
The expansion will increase Amazon’s total storage capacity in India by 50 per cent to 64 million cubic feet, equivalent to more than 720 Olympic-sized swimming pools. The new facilities will be operated and managed by strategic logistics partners.
The company said the expansion will also deepen its presence beyond metropolitan markets, with all six new sort centres and seven of the new fulfilment centres being launched in non-metro cities. Amazon will also open its first fulfilment centres in Raipur, Ranchi and Varanasi, strengthening its operations in Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets.
The new sort centres in Chikkaballapur, Hassan, Meerut, Ramanagar, Raipur and Varanasi will increase Amazon’s total sortation area by 25 per cent, from 2.4 million to three million square feet.
Last-Mile Network Expands Across 118 Cities
Amazon is also adding 150 new last-mile delivery stations across 118 cities, extending its reach deeper into smaller towns and cities. The expansion includes locations such as Asansol, Bathinda, Bikaner, Coimbatore, Doda, Etawah, Gaya, Hosur, Jaunpur, Junagadh, Madurai, Nellore, Puri, Siliguri, Solapur, Tiruvannamalai, Tumkur, Udhampur and West Garo Hills.
Twelve cities — Bhojpur, Bokajan, Jalaun, Jehanabad, Namsai, Puruliya, Ribhoi, Senapati, Sivasagar, Udalguri, Ukhrul and Wokha — will get an Amazon last-mile delivery station for the first time.
Amazon said its continued investment in network expansion has helped same-day deliveries reach 30 per cent more cities over the past year, supporting faster delivery across the country.
The expansion forms part of Amazon’s recently announced investment of more than Rs 2,800 crore to strengthen its India operations network. The company said the enlarged network will bring seller inventory closer to customers and extend its last-mile reach, helping it handle higher festive-season demand.
Amazon Focuses On Faster, More Flexible Deliveries
Abhinav Singh, Vice President – Operations, India, APAC, Middle East, Türkiye and Africa, Amazon, said the company was continuing to invest in its logistics network to get closer to customers and sellers.
“At Amazon, our focus has always been on getting closer to customers and sellers so we can serve them faster and more reliably,” Singh said.
He added that the company is investing more than Rs 2,800 crore, or around $300 million, to strengthen and upgrade its operations network and the technology supporting its infrastructure.
The expanded network is also intended to support different delivery options, ranging from Amazon Now’s delivery in minutes to deliveries within a few hours, as well as Same-Day and Next-Day services.
Singh said the investments would also create tens of thousands of work opportunities and support economic activity in communities across the country.
160,000 Seasonal Jobs Ahead Of Festive Demand
With demand expected to increase during the festive season, Amazon has announced 160,000 seasonal work opportunities across its operations network.
The opportunities will span Amazon’s core and quick-commerce operations across 400 cities, including metropolitan areas as well as Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. Locations mentioned by the company include Ghaziabad, Gorakhpur, Jalandhar, Kochi, Ranchi, Salem and Varanasi.
Amazon said its operations network places a strong focus on safety and the wellbeing of employees and associates. The company has also launched Sammaan, a welfare programme for thousands of delivery associates, covering areas such as scholarships for associates’ children, access to government benefits and financial inclusion programmes, insurance coverage and on-road safety measures.
Amazon Now Expands Ultra-Fast Delivery Network
Alongside its wider logistics expansion, Amazon is scaling up Amazon Now, its ultra-fast delivery service.
The company recently announced plans to expand Amazon Now to more than 300 cities as it seeks to build what it describes as India’s largest ‘delivery in minutes’ network.
Amazon Now is currently available in more than 55 cities through over 750 stores. The company said orders through the service are doubling every quarter, making it the fastest-growing ecommerce business unit in Amazon India’s history.
The specialised fulfilment network is designed to provide customers with a wider selection of products delivered within minutes, adding another layer to Amazon’s broader delivery infrastructure as the festive shopping season approaches.
