Swiggy’s Food on Train service has grown 12-fold in the past two years, with the food delivery platform expanding its reach to 201 railway stations from 66 in 2024 as demand from smaller cities grows faster than in metros.

Adoption in tier 2 and 3 markets has increased at twice the pace recorded in metro cities between August 2024 and August 2026, Swiggy said. The expansion has taken the service to stations including Kolhapur, Wardha, Shahdol, Kakinada, Bharatpur, Chittoor, Thanjavur, Raigarh, Jamnagar, Indore and Tundla.

The growth is also changing what passengers order during train journeys. Swiggy said demand has shifted towards traditional beverages and regional comfort food, while orders for standard carbonated drinks have declined.

Orders for lassi have risen 60 per cent over the past year and those for buttermilk have increased 40 per cent. Mojito orders have grown 90 per cent, according to the company.

Thalis account for more than 65 per cent of all Food on Train orders, while orders for sweets have risen 110 per cent, led by rasgullas.

Sidharth Bhakoo, Chief Business Officer, Swiggy Food Marketplace, said, “Food on Train is a strong example of how technology is creating entirely new consumption occasions, with travellers not only planning meals around their journeys, but also using the opportunity to discover regional favourites along the way.” He added, “Food on Train has witnessed widespread adoption across various consumer cohorts, including Gen Z.”

The service is also giving passengers access to local specialities associated with different railway stations. Pyaz kachori is the top-selling item at Jaipur Junction, while poha ranks among the top 10 breakfast orders in Bhopal.

Biryani varieties are among the leading orders at stations in southern and central India. In Lucknow, biryani is also a popular choice alongside Tunday galouti kebabs.

Haldiram’s thalis lead orders in Nagpur, while seafood thalis are among the top choices at Madgaon in Goa, Swiggy said.

The company has also introduced two features aimed at making food ordering during train journeys simpler. ‘Search by Train’ allows passengers to enter their train number or name to see food options mapped to their route and schedule.

The ‘99 Store Widget’ provides a dedicated section for budget-friendly meals, allowing passengers to find lower-priced food options through the app.
