Proposed joint venture to combine Voltas’ market and manufacturing expertise with Atomberg’s compressor technology, with focus on localisation, energy efficiency and supply chain resilience
Voltas has signed a Binding Term Sheet with Atomberg Innovation to establish a joint venture for the development and manufacture of high-efficiency room air conditioner compressors and related parts in India.
Atomberg Innovation, a material subsidiary of Atomberg Technologies Ltd, specialises in the design, manufacture and supply of motors, electronic assemblies, controller systems and related components.
The proposed joint venture will focus on developing, manufacturing and supplying air conditioner compressors, with an emphasis on energy efficiency, reliability, cost competitiveness and progressive localisation.
The partnership brings together Voltas’ understanding of the Indian room air conditioner market, product and application expertise, manufacturing ecosystem and supply chain capabilities with Atomberg Innovation’s proprietary compressor technology, engineering and product design capabilities, as well as its experience in developing energy-efficient motors and control drives.
The venture will align its operations with India’s evolving regulatory framework, applicable industry standards and energy efficiency requirements, while supporting the broader objective of strengthening domestic manufacturing and developing a competitive, progressively localised supply ecosystem.
Voltas to Anchor Demand
Voltas will act as the anchor customer for the proposed joint venture, providing a stable demand base. Atomberg Innovation will serve as the technology partner, contributing its technology and engineering capabilities.
The joint venture will also have the flexibility to supply compressors to other customers, potentially enabling it to achieve greater scale and participate more broadly in the market.
Mukundan Menon, Managing Director, Voltas, said compressors are central to an air conditioner’s performance, energy efficiency and reliability. He said the partnership would help build indigenous technology capabilities and strengthen Voltas’ long-term supply chain resilience.
“By combining Atomberg’s technology and engineering strengths with Voltas’ market knowledge, manufacturing ecosystem and scale, we intend to build compressors designed for India,” Menon said.
Manoj Meena, Founder, Atomberg, said the partnership would allow the company to combine its capabilities in efficient motors, control drives and advanced engineering with Voltas’ air conditioning expertise, manufacturing capabilities and market scale.
“Together, we aim to create an efficient compressor technology platform developed and manufactured in India,” Meena said.
Focus on Localisation and Supply Chain Resilience
The proposed venture comes as India’s air conditioning industry seeks to deepen domestic manufacturing and reduce dependence on imported components. Compressors are among the most critical components in room air conditioners, directly influencing energy consumption, performance and reliability.
For Voltas, the partnership could strengthen its access to locally developed compressor technology while providing greater control over a key part of its supply chain. For Atomberg, the venture provides an opportunity to extend its engineering and technology capabilities into the room air conditioner compressor segment.
The proposed transaction remains subject to satisfactory completion of due diligence, execution of definitive agreements and receipt of applicable approvals.
