Founder Shiv Ratan Agarwal’s demise marks a key moment for Bikaji Foods as the company reiterates its commitment to continuity, growth and preserving his entrepreneurial legacy

Shiv Ratan Agarwal, founder of Bikaji Foods International, passed away on Thursday, the company said in a regulatory filing, underscoring his role in building one of India’s most recognisable packaged snack brands.

He reportedly complained of uneasiness and was taken to a private hospital in Chennai, where he died, according to media reports. Agarwal had been staying in the city as his wife recently underwent bypass surgery and doctors had advised him to rest.

In its disclosure, Bikaji said it “deeply regret[s] to inform… the sad demise” of Agarwal, who served as promoter, chairman and whole-time director, calling it an “irreparable loss to the organization.”

Agarwal is credited with taking traditional Bikaneri snacks beyond regional markets and positioning them for wider consumption across India and overseas. Starting out independently in 1986 with Shivdeep Products, he later launched the Bikaji brand in 1993, named after Rao Bika, founder of Bikaner.

Over the years, the company expanded its portfolio across bhujia, namkeen, sweets and ready-to-eat offerings, establishing a presence in both domestic and international markets.

“Shri Shiv Ratan Agarwal was a guiding force of the Company since its inception and had built the foundation o fthe brand ‘Bikaji’. He has been pivotal in steering the Company towards success and growth, who transformed the traditional Bikaneri snacks business into the internationally recognized Bikaji brand by combining authentic taste with modern business practices. His strategic acumen and ability to adeptly handle complex challenges have significantly bolstered our operational sustainability,” the company said in a statement.

Focus Remains On Stability And Growth
Reaffirming business continuity, the company said it will “continue to uphold and strengthen the goodwill of the Bikaji brand” while carrying forward his vision. It added that the focus will remain on sustaining growth through a responsible and profitable approach.

Bikaji also said its board, management and employees extend condolences to Agarwal’s family.

Born into the Agarwal family associated with the Haldiram’s business, he was the grandson of Gangabishan ‘Haldiram’ Bhujiawala. While other family members continued the legacy enterprise, Agarwal carved out an independent path.

Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot condoled his demise.

“Through the Bikaji brand, he brought global recognition to Bikaneri bhujia. His demise is an irreparable loss. I pray for peace to the departed soul and strength to the bereaved family,” Gehlot said in a post on X.
