India’s Summer Hair Care Boom Driven by Climate Stress

Rising climate stress, ingredient-led innovation and preventive wellness are redefining how Indians approach scalp health and grooming

India’s hair care market is witnessing rapid transformation as extreme summer conditions, changing consumer lifestyles and rising awareness around scalp health drive demand for targeted grooming solutions. Currently valued between USD 4.1 billion and USD 6 billion, the Indian hair care market is projected to reach between USD 6.6 billion and USD 15 billion by 2031, expanding at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 5 per cent to 11 per cent depending on product categories.
Industry leaders say rising temperatures, humidity, pollution and prolonged heat exposure are reshaping hair care habits across the country, pushing consumers towards preventive, ingredient-led and wellness-oriented routines. The shift is also expanding market penetration beyond metro cities into tier-II and tier-III towns, while driving premiumisation and innovation across the category.

Climate stress driving higher usage and specialised routines
Ashish Chaudhary, AVP, Group Lead Retail & Training, The Body Shop, said changing climate conditions are making scalp care a growing priority among consumers.
“Rising heat, humidity, and pollution are making scalp care a priority, with concerns like sweat, buildup, dandruff, frizz, and hair fall becoming more visible in summer,” he said.
“This is driving demand for targeted, need-based routines from purifying and anti-dandruff solutions like tea tree and ginger-led care to nourishing options such as shea and hair masks for dryness and frizz. Consumers are also engaging with the category more frequently, especially during peak summer, and this behaviour is expanding beyond metros. Climate conditions are leading to higher usage, more specialised routines, and broader adoption, which is driving growth in the hair care and grooming market.”
Edyta Kurek, Senior Vice President and Head, Oriflame India and Indonesia, said consumers are increasingly investing in scalp health and preventive hair wellness.
“Rising heat, humidity and pollution levels are intensifying concerns such as scalp sweat, dandruff, frizz, dryness and hair fall, especially during summers. This is driving strong demand for targeted hair care and grooming solutions focused on scalp health, hydration and protection against environmental stressors,” she said.
“Consumers are also adopting more comprehensive routines that go beyond cleansing to include scalp tonics, serums and repair-focused products.”
Kurek added that ingredient-led products are gaining significant traction across urban and emerging markets.
“At Oriflame India, our DUOLOGI and Love Nature ranges are seeing strong traction as consumers increasingly seek ingredient-led solutions powered by ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, wheat proteins, organic tea tree oil and natural fruit extracts that help nourish the scalp and strengthen hair in challenging climatic conditions,” she said.
“The category is also expanding rapidly beyond metros into tier-II and tier-III cities through growing awareness and digital influence. Consumers today are prioritising long-term hair wellness and preventive care, creating strong opportunities for brands offering climate-responsive and performance-driven solutions.”

Climate-Adaptive Hair Care Drives Consumer Demand
Smit Shukla, Country Head, Philips Personal Health, India Subcontinent, said rising heat, humidity and pollution are reshaping grooming habits and accelerating demand for preventive, climate-responsive hair care solutions.

“India’s diverse and extreme climate conditions are fundamentally reshaping grooming and hair care needs. Consumers are experiencing concerns like scalp sweat, dandruff flare-ups, frizz, dryness, heat-induced oiliness, breakage, and hair thinning, prompting a shift from one-size-fits-all routines to more preventive grooming,” he said.

“Awareness is also rising across Tier 2 and 3 markets, where digital access and influencer-led education are accelerating adoption. Consumers are increasingly seeking problem-solution driven products tailored to Indian hair textures and environmental exposure.”

Shukla added that brands are increasingly focusing on scalp-first care and low-heat styling technologies. “The industry is seeing a clear shift towards climate-adaptive innovation, with a sharper focus on scalp-first care and low-heat styling technologies. At Philips, we are driving this through our ‘Designed for Indian Hair’ philosophy, building solutions that address climate-led, everyday hair challenges rather than generic styling needs,” he said.

“We have incorporated technologies such as ThermoProtect / ThermoShield sensors with intelligent heat regulation, along with hydration-focused ionic technology designed to retain moisture and protect natural hair strength.”

Hair care evolves into wellness-led category
Experts say consumers are no longer viewing hair care as a purely cosmetic category, but increasingly as an extension of overall wellness.
Stuti Ashok Gupta, Co-founder of Amrutam, said India’s changing summers are altering how people approach scalp and hair health.
“The way we experience summer in India has changed. It’s no longer just a few hotter months, it’s prolonged heat, rising humidity, and constant exposure to pollution. From an Ayurvedic lens, this isn’t just environmental change; it’s a sustained aggravation of Pitta (heat) and Kapha (oiliness and dampness) within the body,” she said.
“And the body always reflects what it experiences. We’re seeing this show up more consistently in the scalp and hair – persistent dandruff, excess sweating, unexplained hair fall, irritation, frizz. What used to be seasonal concerns are now becoming almost year-round patterns.”
According to Gupta, consumers are increasingly recognising scalp issues as signs of deeper imbalance rather than temporary cosmetic concerns.
“This shift is quietly changing how consumers think about hair care. There is a growing understanding that these are not just cosmetic problems, but signs of deeper imbalance. As a result, people are seeking solutions that go beyond surface-level treatment and instead support long-term scalp health and internal balance,” she said.
“This awareness is no longer limited to metro cities. It is steadily expanding into Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets, where consumers are increasingly open to Ayurvedic and preventive approaches. Hair care today is evolving from a grooming routine into an extension of overall wellness.”

Ayurveda and ingredient-led innovation gain momentum
The market is also witnessing rising demand for Ayurveda-inspired and botanical formulations aimed at addressing climate-induced scalp concerns.
Gupta said brands are increasingly turning to traditional ingredients with scalp-soothing and balancing properties.
“Brands are increasingly turning to Ayurveda-inspired formulations to address climate-induced hair concerns at the root level. The focus is on cooling herbs, scalp-soothing botanicals, and oil-balancing ingredients that help pacify excess Pitta and Kapha,” she said.
“Ingredients like neem, amla, bhringraj, aloe vera, and hibiscus are being widely used for their proven scalp-rebalancing and strengthening properties.”
“At Amrutam, our approach is rooted in classical Ayurvedic wisdom, where hair health is seen as a reflection of internal harmony. Our formulations, be it application based or consumable Malt, aim to restore balance, strengthen the scalp naturally, and build resilience against seasonal stressors, offering long-term care rather than temporary, surface-level solutions.”
Hari Ram Rinwa, Founder of Ashpveda, said rising temperatures and pollution are making summer hair care a necessity rather than a seasonal trend.
“The increasing temperature, moisture levels, and pollution have had a major impact on consumer needs in the summer hair care segment of India. Problems like dandruff, sweat on the scalp, hair loss, and hair frizz have started emerging, and consumers are now moving from using hair care products on an irregular basis to taking measures to prevent problems before they occur,” he said.
“Summer hair care is no longer a seasonal trend but is considered crucial now. This has also made the market penetrate further into smaller tier cities, making the market bigger in size and frequency.”
Rinwa added that consumers are increasingly looking for lightweight, climate-adaptive and convenient formats.
“Brands, in turn, are now coming up with innovative products that are lightweight and weather-specific, especially for humid and hot climates. Some popular examples include serums to avoid frizziness, tonic sprays, and dry shampoos due to the efficacy and convenience they offer,” he said.
“There has been an increase in products driven by ingredients, which combine the best elements from nature along with modern-day science to tackle specific issues. Alongside all this, brands have managed to provide both premium options and affordable price tags.”

Safe, Everyday Hair Care Gains Ground Among Young Consumers
Prasanna Vasanadu, Parent Educator and Founder of Tikitoro, said rising summer heat, humidity and pollution are driving demand for gentle, preventive and everyday-use hair care products, especially among younger consumers.

“Summer heat, humidity and pollution increase scalp sweat, oil buildup, dandruff, itchiness, and greasiness, especially during Indian summers. Consumers are now washing their hair more frequently and shifting towards preventive, daily-use haircare instead of occasional treatments,” she said.

“There is also growing awareness around the connection between scalp health and skin concerns like acne caused by sweat and flakes. Consumers are actively seeking sulphate-free, toxin-free, and non-irritating formulations that can cleanse effectively without stripping natural moisture from delicate young scalps.”

Vasanadu added that brands are increasingly innovating with lightweight and age-appropriate grooming solutions tailored for hot weather conditions.

“Brands are increasingly launching lightweight, non-greasy, and climate-adaptive products designed for hot and humid weather conditions. Companies are also introducing age-appropriate products for younger users, such as gentle deo mist, anti-dandruff shampoos and sunscreen formats that fit into everyday summer routines,” she said.

Premiumisation and science-backed solutions reshape the market
As consumers become more ingredient-conscious, brands are diversifying portfolios with high-performance and multifunctional formulations.
Chaudhary of The Body Shop said personalisation and ingredient credibility are becoming central to consumer choices.
“The shift in haircare is towards personalisation anchored in ingredient credibility. Consumers are increasingly choosing routines based on what their hair needs, whether it’s purifying care with tea tree, anti-dandruff solutions with ginger, or deep nourishment with shea and banana ranges,” he said.
“There is also growing interest in treatment-led formats like scalp scrubs and masks, signalling a move beyond basic cleansing.”
He added that brands are increasingly focusing on convenience-led formats.
“Formats continue to evolve, with lighter textures and flexible options like shampoo bars, making routines easier to adapt to everyday summer conditions. Overall, innovation is focused on making haircare more targeted, ingredient-driven, and aligned with real usage behaviours.”
Kurek said consumers are increasingly gravitating towards skincare-inspired and multifunctional hair care formulations.
“Brands are increasingly innovating with lightweight and multifunctional formulations that address concerns such as frizz, scalp oiliness, dryness, and environmental damage. Consumers are looking for products that deliver hydration, nourishment, and effective scalp care, while remaining easy to use in their daily routines,” she said.
“This has led to growing demand for scalp-focused care, hydration-led formulations, and ingredient-driven routines that support overall hair wellness.”
“At Oriflame, we are seeing strong interest in skincare-inspired hair care solutions that combine nature-inspired ingredients with scientific expertise. Products across our DUOLOGI and Love Nature ranges are designed to maintain scalp balance and nourish hair,” Kurek added.
“Consumers are also gravitating towards science-backed, sensorial formulations that blend efficacy with convenience, encouraging brands to build more performance-led and lifestyle-oriented portfolios across price points.”

Professional and salon-grade products see rising demand
Rayed Merchant, Director, SSIZ International, said extreme weather conditions are accelerating demand for salon-grade and results-driven products.
“India’s increasingly extreme summer conditions, marked by high humidity, intense heat, UV exposure, and rising pollution levels are reshaping consumer hair care behavior. These environmental stressors accelerate common concerns such as frizz, dehydration, scalp sensitivity, and excessive hair fall, especially in urban and coastal regions,” he said.
“Cadiveu Professional, a professional haircare brand, trusted in over 80+ countries is at the forefront of this evolution, offering advanced, salon-grade and homecare solutions such as the Nutri Glow range, which is designed to combat offer nourishment, restore moisture, boost long-lasting shine, and provide hydration retention, while protecting against environmental aggressors.”
Merchant noted that rising awareness around professional hair care is driving category growth beyond metros.
“This has expanded demand not only in metro cities but also in Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets, where awareness around professional hair care is rapidly growing,” he said.
“Additionally, the summer season has become a key consumption window, with consumers investing in treatments that can withstand humidity and reduce daily styling effort. As a result, the market is not just growing in size but also evolving toward more high-performance, results-driven products.”
On innovation and premiumisation, Merchant said consumers are increasingly seeking complete haircare experiences.
“The Indian summer haircare market is witnessing a strong wave of innovation and premiumisation, driven by evolving consumer expectations for performance, convenience, and ingredients. Today’s consumers are actively seeking lightweight, climate-adaptive solutions that address humidity, frizz, and damage without weighing the hair down,” he said.
“Brands are responding with diversified portfolios that include anti-frizz serums, hydrating masks, scalp-focused treatments, alongside advanced salon-grade solutions that offer longer-lasting results.”
“This approach ensures accessibility across both premium and mass-market segments, catering to a wide spectrum of consumers with varying hair concerns and budgets.”
Merchant added that ingredient-rich formulations are increasingly becoming a differentiator in the premium segment.
“Cadiveu Professional exemplifies this shift through its ingredient-rich formulations that include vegetable oils, shea butter, essential lipids etc. The Nutri Glow range bridges salon and homecare, offering a nourishment ritual that delivers up to 8X shinier hair with anti-frizz protection for up to 72 hours,” he said.
“This blend of innovation and premiumisation reflects a larger industry movement, where consumers are no longer just buying products, but investing in complete haircare experiences that deliver visible, lasting transformation.”

Chemical awareness reshapes the hair colour segment
Another major trend emerging in India’s summer hair care market is growing consumer awareness around scalp sensitivity and chemical exposure in hair colouring products.
Dr. Harinder K. Arya, Haircare Expert, Chief Scientist & Co-founder, Indus Valley, warned that extreme heat and humidity are amplifying scalp damage caused by chemical dyes.
“India’s hair care market is booming but beneath the growth lies a silent crisis. Every summer, millions of Indians apply chemical hair colour, unknowingly triggering scalp damage at its worst,” he said.
“Heat dilates pores, sweat activates allergens, and UV radiation amplifies reactions. The result: contact dermatitis, scalp burns, dandruff flare-ups, and in severe cases, lifelong allergies — all courtesy of PPD, ammonia, and hydrogen peroxide baked into most conventional dyes.”
Arya said India’s botanical heritage offers safer alternatives better suited to the country’s climate conditions.
“The answer isn’t to stop colouring it’s to colour smarter. India’s own botanical heritage holds the solution: henna cools the scalp and fights fungal buildup; indigo delivers rich, lasting colour without oxidation; amla strengthens and conditions from root to tip. Together, they deliver vibrant results without a single harmful molecule,” he said.
“At Indus Valley, we built our Organic Gel Hair Colour on this very philosophy, PPD-free, ammonia-free, hydrogen peroxide (HPO) and damage-free. A formula designed not in spite of the Indian summer, but specifically for it. Because your hair deserves colour that works with your scalp’s biology, not against it.”
He added that consumers are increasingly unwilling to compromise between safety and performance.
“And if you’re looking for a better, faster application process with long-lasting colour all without a single harmful chemical Indus Valley Damage-Free Gel Hair Colour is your answer. Its smooth gel consistency glides on effortlessly, covers grey with precision, and locks in rich, vibrant colour that endures through heat, sweat, and sun. No compromise on performance. No compromise on safety.”

A climate-responsive category poised for long-term growth
Industry experts believe India’s hair care sector is entering a new phase where climate-responsive formulations, scalp wellness, ingredient transparency and personalised routines will define future growth.
As heatwaves intensify and pollution levels rise, consumers are increasingly moving towards preventive and treatment-led solutions that offer both performance and long-term hair health. From Ayurvedic botanicals and salon-grade treatments to lightweight multifunctional products and science-backed formulations, the Indian summer hair care market is rapidly evolving into one of the country’s most dynamic beauty and personal care segments.
