Historic foray marks a new era for the 100-year-old company with a focus on home state Assam and future nationwide growth
After a 100-year history, B&A has ventured into the retail segment with its new ‘Gatoonga’ brand of black tea, according to a senior company official. The brand was launched in Assam as the company reportedly aims to establish a foothold in the local market before expanding to other regions of the country.
According to reports, Deputy Managing Director Dhruba Jyoti Dowerah noted that the company’s parent group previously had four verticals, with retail branding now becoming the fifth. The existing verticals include tea manufacturing and processing, packaging, tea tourism and broking.
B&A has its roots in the Barasali Tea Company, which was established in 1915. Currently, the company operates 11 tea estates in upper Assam, producing 5.5 million kilograms of black tea last year.
Chatterjee highlighted that the Group has launched a Rs 50 crore capital expenditure plan for nationwide growth, recently acquiring the Moheema tea estate in Golaghat district. This marks the company’s first acquisition in over six decades.
