Amazon Brings Dedicated Air Cargo Service To Northeast

The company says that the expansion is expected to improve delivery speeds by up to five times across all seven sister states
Ecommerce major Amazon has expanded Amazon Air, its dedicated air cargo service, to northeast India, introducing new routes connecting Kolkata and Guwahati. The expansion is expected to improve delivery speeds by up to five times across all seven sister states, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura.
“In 2023, we launched our Amazon air service, which is our dedicated freighter service of two aircraft, and today, we are expanding that service by adding a new route from Delhi to Guwahati. This will increase the speed of packages to the northeast significantly. The packages will now be upto five times faster in the northeast,” Abhinav Singh, Vice President, Operations, India and Australia, Amazon, told reporters.
Singh added that cities across all of the northeast through the company’s multimodal network, which includes not just aircraft but trains and trucks, will be able to receive packages much faster. “We are the only ecommerce company which has a dedicated cargo network,” he explained.
Operating two narrow-body freighters, the service moves tens of thousands of packages daily, Singh added. Its overnight routes connect major metros including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Guwahati and Pune. Including belly cargo partnerships, Amazon’s air network now serves over 100 origin-destination pairs across India.
“It is not just about accelerating packages. For sellers who are in the northeast of India, they will be able to reach customers through the same network to every single postcode or pincode much faster than they were able to before. When you increase speed and reliability of delivery, customers start trusting you more,” he pointed out.
Ram Mohan Naidu, Minister of Civil Aviation, said that given the northeast’s immense potential in horticulture and cargo exports, introduction of Amazon Air’s cargo route from Delhi to Guwahati will further support the farmers, artisans and entrepreneurs of the region. In Budget 2026, special emphasis has been placed on building air cargo infrastructure and warehousing capacity to strengthen logistics for perishable and high-value products, he added.
“This is also in line with the government’s push on accelerating the infrastructure and development in northeast India. As more and more people in the northeast started coming online, we started seeing demand for goods go up. We have also invested in setting up the fulfilment centres over there. Last year, we spoke about investing about Rs 2,000 crore in building out fulfilment centres and upgrading our facilities. Of that investment, we set up 17 fulfilment centres across the country and some of those were in the northeast,” Singh explained.
