The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) states that these firms were storing, selling and exhibiting products which did not have the BIS standard mark
By stocking products without having the required standards certificate, Amazon and Flipkart, the major players in the ecommerce ecosystem have violated the Indian quality control rules, as per a report by Reuters which cited the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
The Indian product certification agency, BIS, recently conducted raids on warehouses operated by these two players in Tiruvallur, Tamil Nadu and found that these firms were storing, selling and exhibiting products which did not have the BIS standard mark.
Around 3,376 substandard products were seized from the Amazon warehouse worth Rs 36 lakh. The Bureau stated that substandard products, including 286 packs of baby diapers, 36 boxes of casseroles and stainless steel water bottles were seized at the Flipkart warehouse.
The Reuters report quoted Amazon India’s spokesperson who stated that the company was engaged closely with various stakeholders including regulators. On the other hand, Flipkart stated that it worked with sellers to drive awareness as well as ensuring that it was complying with the laws, the report highlighted.
Earlier during the month, BIS carried out another such crackdown on unsafe products as it raided Amazon and Flipkart warehouses in Gurgaon, Lucknow and Delhi where it seized substandard toys, blenders, bottles and speakers, violating the BIS Act 2016. As per the official post on X (formerly Twitter), the Bureau stated that By seizing these substandard items, it ensures that only products meeting safety standards are sold to consumers, thereby protecting them from substandard goods.
