India To Oppose Extension Of Ecommerce Duty Ban At WTO

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi called the listings ‘insensitive’ and a violation of national sentiment

As the tension between India and Pakistan escalated in the recent times, the Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Pralhad Joshi on Wednesday issued a sharp warning to ecommerce platforms after the sale of Pakistani national flags and related merchandise surfaced online, calling the listings ‘insensitive’ and a violation of national sentiment.

Taking to social media, Joshi said the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has issued notices to Amazon India, Flipkart, Ubuy India, Etsy, The Flag Company, and The Flag Corporation, directing them to take down such content immediately.

“The CCPA has issued notices to @amazonIN, @Flipkart, @UbuyIndia, @Etsy, The Flag Company and The Flag Corporation over the sale of Pakistani flags and related merchandise. Such insensitivity will not be tolerated. E-commerce platforms are hereby directed to immediately remove all such content and adhere to National laws,” Joshi posted on X.

The minister’s remarks came a day after a traders’ association flagged the listings, urging the government to take action against platforms allegedly allowing the sale of foreign national symbols.
