While 1.5 million seeds have been delivered so far, four million palm oil seeds were to be supplied as part of the contract
In an effort to support India’s domestic palm oil cultivation efforts, Sawit Kinabalu, a Malaysian state agency, has supplied 1.5 million palm oil seeds to Patanjali Group, a fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) major. This is part of a five-year contract that will end in 2027, as per the media reports.
The reports noted that this marked the first instance of a state agency striking a deal for supplying palm oil seeds, as Malaysia is already one of the key suppliers of palm oil to India. The contract was signed by Sawit Kinabalu Group’s seeds subsidiary, which houses an annual capacity to process 10 million palm oil seeds.
While 1.5 million seeds have been delivered so far, four million palm oil seeds were to be supplied as part of the contract. The reports added that the company also gives advisory services, agronomist site visits and monitoring of planted seed mortality, in addition to supplying seeds.
The media reports emphasised that the Patanjali Group aims to establish a palm oil mill in northeast India, likely to be commissioned by 2026. The same reports mentioned that the country has around 3,69,000 hectare under oil palm cultivation.
