US Retailer Walmart Asks Chinese Suppliers To Resume Shipments: Report

Walmart To Build Or Convert 150-plus Stores Over Next 5 years

The report states that the United States (US) clients will bear the costs of the new import duties

Following a series of tariff hikes between the United States (US) and China which led to a slowdown in shipments, major US retailers, including Walmart, have notified the Chinese suppliers to resume shipping goods that had been temporarily suspended due to the tariff war, as per a report by South China Morning Post.

The report added that a few manufacturers in China’s Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces have been told by these retailers to resume shipments. US clients will bear the costs of the new import duties, as per the reports.

Exporters in Jiangsu have been asked to prepare themselves to meet the recovery in demand. As per the reports, Mainetti, which partners with various American retail groups, stated that the Chinese vendors have been advised to resume orders. Mainetti’s Regional Director added that notices of similar nature were circulated by the US clients earlier as well, the reports noted.

Since 2 April 2025, many US importers either cancelled the Chinese orders or put them hold, leading to order getting plummeted by over 40 per cent in April on a year-on-year basis, as per the reports which added that vendors have now altered the way shipments are handled. This is to account for the tariffs.

In a major development, the report added that the vendors have started quoting free on board (FOB) rather than delivered duty paid (DDP), allowing the US importers to handle import tariffs in their country with their local clearance agents.
