Food regulator has sought an explanation from the manufacturer within seven days after raising concerns over the product’s “100% Atta”, “No Added Sugar” and “Digestive” claims
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a notice to SAJ Food Products after receiving a consumer complaint over claims made on its “Eat Fit Digestive Biscuits” packaging. According to the food regulator, the complaint alleged that while the front of the pack prominently carried a “100 per cent Atta” claim, the ingredient declaration indicated that atta constituted only 72.33 per cent of the product, raising concerns about potentially misleading labelling.
In its notice, FSSAI flagged multiple issues related to the product’s packaging and promotional claims. The regulator said that the “No Added Sugar” assertion could mislead consumers as the biscuits contain maltodextrin and glucose syrup solids.
FSSAI further noted that the “100 per cent Atta” claim may not be in line with existing advisories, as the product also contains other ingredients and additives.
The authority also observed that the use of the product name “Eat Fit Digestive” would require scientific substantiation in accordance with the Food Safety and Standards Regulations, 2018.
The regulator has asked SAJ Food Products to submit its explanation within seven days and clarify why action should not be initiated under the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, FSSAI said: “FSSAI has issued a notice to SAJ Food Products following a consumer complaint regarding misleading claims on ‘Eat Fit Digestive Biscuits’. The manufacturer has been directed to furnish an explanation within 7 days.”
