GDK plans its India entry in 2026 as part of a global push to scale its network and reach 1 billion pounds in revenue over the next five years

UK-based fast-food chain German Doner Kebab (GDK) is preparing to enter the Indian market with its first outlet scheduled to open early next year, as the company works towards its ambition of reaching 1 billion pounds (USD 1.32 billion) in global revenue within the next five years, Reuters reported.

CEO Simon Wallis indicated that India fits centrally into the company’s expansion strategy and described the market as “ripe” for GDK’s menu, pointing to factors such as higher disposable incomes and growing protein consumption. He also noted that “it’s a thriving economy,” a dynamic he believes is drawing several international brands to the country.

Backed by private equity investor True, GDK is looking to expand its footprint to nearly 900 restaurants, up from its current network of over 170 locations across the UK, Europe, North America and the Middle East.

The expansion is taking place as global brands, including Little Caesars and Papa John’s, step up their India plans, even as established operators such as KFC and Pizza Hut, owned by Yum Brands, experience slower sales due to cautious consumer spending. Wallis suggested that these trends are creating opportunities for newer and more disruptive entrants to gain ground in the market.

GDK’s debut in India is planned for early 2026 through a master franchise partnership with GBC India, a Middle East-based bakery products supplier, which will spearhead nationwide expansion.

Following the approach taken by McDonald’s and Burger King, the chain will not serve beef in India. Instead, it will offer lamb to align with local dietary preferences.

While former CEO Imran Sayeed said in 2022 that the brand could pursue a New York Stock Exchange listing within three to five years, Wallis noted that the priority has shifted to achieving the 1 billion pound sales target. He reiterated that the company has no immediate plans to go public.

For 2025, GDK expects its revenue to grow to over 183 million pounds, compared with 161 million pounds in 2024, Wallis said.
