Tata Group’s Tata Electronics is likely to expand its existing iPhone-casing unit in Hosur to up to twice its current size and capacity, according to a media report on Monday.
The company’s aim is to enlarge its contract manufacturing of high-end electronic items and accessories, the report added.
Currently, the Hosur unit, spread across 500 acres, employs more than 15,000 people, and its expansion might create working opportunities for nearly 25,000 to 28,000 people.
The new facility could be dedicated entirely to Apple phone components, but there are possibilities that the unit could also manufacture high-end phone components for other companies.
Tata Electronics has recently acquired Wistron’s iPhone assembly plant at Narasapura in Karnataka’s Kolar district, and with the expansion of its Hosur unit, reports suggest that the company is indeed supporting Apple’s ambitious target for exports from India.
