WPI Inflation Dips To 0.39% In May, Lowest In 14 Months

Fuel and Power group’s index declined by 0.95 per cent to 146.7 in May 2025 from 148.1 in April 2025

Led by easing prices across key categories, India’s wholesale price index (WPI)-based inflation came down to a 14-month low of 0.39 per cent in May 2025, as per the data from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The same inflation was 0.85 per cent in April 2025.

“Positive rate of inflation in May, 2025 is primarily due to increase in prices of manufacture of food products, electricity, other manufacturing, chemicals and chemical products, manufacture of other transport equipment and non-food articles,” the Centre stated.

The index for primary articles group decreased by 0.05 per cent to 184.3 in May from 184.4 in April 2025 as the price of minerals (-7.16 per cent) and non-food articles (-0.63 per cent) decreased in May as compared to April. However, price of food articles (0.56 per cent) increased in May on a month-on-month (MoM) basis.

Fuel and Power group’s index declined by 0.95 per cent to 146.7 in May 2025 from 148.1 in April, 2025. Price of mineral oils (-2.06 per cent) decreased in May as compared to April. The price of coal (0.81 per cent) and electricity (0.80 per cent) increased in May as compared to April, data revealed.

The index for manufactured products group, having a weight of 64.23 per cent, remained unchanged at 144.9 in May. Out of the 22 NIC two-digit groups for manufactured products, 10 groups witnessed an increase in prices, nine groups witnessed a decrease in prices and three groups witnessed no change in prices.

“The food index consisting of ‘food articles’ from primary articles group and ‘food product’ from manufactured products group have increased from 189.3 in April to 189.5 in May. The rate of inflation based on WPI Food Index decreased from 2.55 per cent in April to 1.72% in May 2025,” the official statement added.

As far as the response rate is concerned, the WPI for May 2025 has been compiled at a weighted response rate of 89.8 per cent, while the final figure for May 2025 is based on the weighted response rate of 96.4 per cent. The statement also highlighted that for the month of March 2025, the final Wholesale Price Index (WPI) and inflation rate for ‘all commodities’ stood at 154.8 and 2.25 per cent, respectively.
