Swiggy Reports 3x Growth In Train Food Orders, Tier 4 Demand Rises

The food delivery platform says orders for its Food on Train service tripled year-on-year in Q1 FY27, with emerging towns outpacing metros and multi-station bookings gaining momentum during the summer travel season

Swiggy reported a threefold year-on-year increase in orders for its Food on Train service during the April–June quarter (Q1 FY27), as rising adoption in Tier-IV and other emerging towns helped drive growth during the peak summer travel season. The company added that the demand from emerging towns grew 253 per cent year-on-year, surpassing the pace seen in larger cities. Swiggy attributed the growth to increasing digital adoption among railway passengers and the expansion of its Food on Train service to more than 180 cities.

Long-distance travellers also contributed to higher order values, with multi-station bookings—where passengers order meals at two or more stations during a single journey—rising more than 300 per cent from a year earlier. According to the company, customers using the feature spent around 2.2 times more than those placing orders at a single station. The Bhopal–Nagpur route emerged as the busiest multi-stop ordering corridor, with over 1,300 passengers placing food orders at both stations during the same journey.

To streamline the ordering process, Swiggy introduced a “Scan Your Ticket” feature that enables users to upload their train ticket, automatically detect the PNR number and place orders without manually entering travel details.

The platform also expanded its railway network by adding 17 stations, including Gurugram, Udaipur, Bikaner, Davanagere, Kayamkulam, Nanded, Amravati, Shoranur, Arrah, Tadpatri and Nizamabad. In Guna, Madhya Pradesh, 66 per cent of Food on Train orders came from first-time Swiggy users, reflecting growing adoption in smaller markets.

“Food on Train has witnessed exponential growth in the last one year and the last quarter has been no different, with a threefold year-on-year growth in orders. It is heartening to see the consumer response across the country, with customers increasingly booking meals well in advance. Even in tier 4 towns, travellers are discovering digital food ordering for the first time while waiting at railway stations,” said Deepak Maloo, Vice President – Food Strategy, Customer Experience and New Initiatives, Swiggy.

The company said changing travel and consumption patterns were also evident in food preferences during the quarter. Roti emerged as the most-ordered item, with more than four lakh rotis delivered through the platform. Masala dosa, aloo paratha, McAloo Tikki Burger and chicken biryani were among the other popular choices. Demand for beverages also increased during the summer months. Mango shake orders were nearly ten times higher than during winter, while soft drink orders rose 354 per cent. Lassi orders doubled and ice cream orders increased 140 per cent.

Haldiram’s, Paradise Biryani, A2B – Adyar Ananda Bhavan, McDonald’s and KFC were among the most popular restaurant brands ordered by train travellers. Swiggy currently partners with more than 2.7 lakh restaurants across over 720 cities
