BPNI Files Complaint Against Amul For Promoting Its New Infant Formula

BPNI has requested a thorough investigation into this alleged violation and has requested to issue directive to Amul to cease all promotional activity of infant milk substitutes

Accusing Amul of promoting its newly introduced liquid ready-to-feed infant formula, the Breastfeeding Promotion Network of India (BPNI) has filed a complaint with the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Women and Child Development and other bodies. The BPNI has claimed that the dairy major has violated the Infant Milk Substitutes, 1992.

In a complaint letter addressed to the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), the Food Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and above above-stated ministries, Arun Gupra, Chief Coordinator, BPNI stated, “I am writing to bring to your collective attention a serious concern regarding the recent launch and media promotion by Amul of its new product, a liquid ready-to-feed formula under the brand Amulspray, which is an infant milk substitute.”

The body accused that Amul has highlighted and claimed that it is ‘ideal to carry’ and good for working mothers, and ensures adequate nutrition. BPNI added that these appear to amount to promotion of infant milk substitute.

“Further, Amul is seen in violation of yet another section of the IMS Act, section six, which explicitly prohibits the use of any graphics or phrases to increase saleability,” the organisation working to protect, promote and support breastfeeding practices, added.

BPNI has requested a thorough investigation into this alleged violation and has requested to issue directive to Amul to cease all promotional activity of infant milk substitutes.
