Proposed National Ecommerce & Retail Trade Policies In The Works: Report

Ecommerce Logistics Trends 2024: A Glimpse Into The Future of Retail Fulfillment

The report states that suggestions have been sought from the National Traders’ Welfare Board on the national retail trade policy aspect

The Centre is working on proposed national ecommerce and retail trade policies, as both are linked together, as per a report by the news agency PTI. The Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said that the revisions reflect the sector’s rapid evolution.

The report cited Goyal, who said that as the ecommerce sector is growing rapidly, the Centre came out with a few ideas, but it will have to revise the policy to make it more contemporary. The retail trade policy is also under review since both are linked to each other.

Suggestions have been sought from the National Traders’ Welfare Board regarding the formulation of the national retail trade policy. Aimed at streamlining retail trade and the growth of all formats of the retail trade sector, a draft retail trade policy was made in 2021.

The report noted that it was directed towards improving the ease of doing business, facilitating retail trade’s digitisation and modernisation, and ensuring quick access to affordable credit. On the national ecommerce policy front, the ministry had issued two drafts earlier.

The 2019 draft was aimed at addressing six key areas of the digital commerce ecosystem. These included data, ecommerce marketplaces, regulatory issues, infrastructure growth, export promotion through ecommerce and stimulating the domestic digital economy, the report highlighted.
