The move is aimed at empowering Indian consumers to make healthier choices, reversing India’s rising obesity crisis
To empower consumers to make healthier choices and combat the country’s rising obesity rates, the Supreme Court of India has directed the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to implement the front-of-pack nutrition labels on packaged foods, according to a post on X by Shiv Sena MP and Milind Deora.
Deora, who is Chair of Parliament’s Subordinate Legislation Committee, this would help FSSAI comply without further delays and empower Indian consumers to make healthier choices, reversing India’s rising obesity crisis.
“The Supreme Court has directed FSSAI to implement simple front-of-pack nutrition labels on packaged food. As Chair of Parliament’s Subordinate Legislation Committee, I have recommended studying Singapore’s clear A-to-D Nutri-grade system,” Deora added in his post.
The reports highlighted that the Union Health Ministry has also proposed displaying sugar and oil boards as an initiative to drive healthier habits. The boards will display key information regarding hidden fats and sugars in everyday foods, as per the reports.
In an earlier post, Deora mentioned that they have unanimously advocated uniform regulations across all food categories, including alcohol, so Indian food is not unfairly targeted while multinational corporations (MNCs) continue to market Western junk unchecked.
In light of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s move to inform consumers about ingredients in samosas and jalebis, the Parliamentary Subordinate Legislation Committee, which I chair, is currently reviewing FSSAI’s plans to tackle India’s growing Obesity crisis, in line with PM Narendra Modi’s vision for a healthier nation,” he highlighted in his post.
