The decline is primarily attributed to a dip in prices of food articles, mineral oils, manufacture of basic metal
Driven by the dip in prices of food articles, mineral oils, manufacture of basic metal, India’s wholesale inflation has decreased to -0.13 per cent in June on a year-on-year (YoY) basis, data from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry showed.
The June figures mark a reversal from 0.39 per cent Wholesale Price Index (WPI) inflation in May 2025. The month-over-month change in WPI for June 2025 stood at (-) 0.19 per cent as compared to May 2025, the ministry said.
“The annual rate of inflation based on all India Wholesale Price Index (WPI) number is (-) 0.13 per cent (provisional) for the month of June 2025 (over June 2024). Negative rate of inflation in June, 2025 is primarily due to a decrease in prices of food articles, mineral oils, manufacture of basic metals, crude petroleum and natural gas, etc,” the ministry noted.
As far as the WPI food index is concerned, the ministry added that the food index, consisting of ‘food articles’ from the primary articles group and ‘food product’ from the manufactured products group, has increased from 189.5 in May 2025 to 190.2 in June 2025. The rate of inflation based on the WPI food index decreased from 1.72 per cent in May to (-0.26 per cent) in June 2025.
“The persistent decline in WPI inflation since December 2024 is a positive sign for higher economic growth in India. Looking ahead, considering the rise in domestic demand, expectations of a normal monsoon, and strong overall economic activity in the country, we anticipate WPI inflation to remain moderate in the coming months despite ongoing geopolitical uncertainties,” highlighted Hemant Jain, President, PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI).
The index for the primary articles group increased by 0.81 per cent in June 2025 as compared to May 2025. The price of crude petroleum and natural gas (-0.44 per cent) decreased in June 2025 as compared to May 2025.
The index for the fuel and power group declined by 2.25 per cent in June on a sequential basis. Price of electricity (-9.10 per cent), mineral oils (-0.54 per cent) and coal (-0.07 per cent) decreased on a MoM basis in June. The ministry added that the index for the manufactured products group declined by 0.07 per cent in June on a MoM basis.
Out of the 22 NIC two-digit groups for manufactured products, 11 groups witnessed an increase in prices, six groups witnessed a decrease in prices, and five groups witnessed no change in prices. Some of the groups that witnessed a decrease in prices were the manufacture of basic metals, food products, fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment, tobacco products, rubber and plastics products, etc, in June 2025 as compared to May 2025.
